Crafts ;specialists in the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food say it's easy to make tree ornaments, wail plaques, table dec'ora.tions. O sculptures from dough, For table d ecorations Or sculptures, select a' recipe. for a plain white bread dough that. will' hold its shape and won't crack when bake& bread basket centrepiece to hold rolls, pastries or cheeses would be at. tractive for yore` Christmas table. For the children, make one large animal cen- trepiece or small in- dividual sculptures. - .a rabbit, turtle, teddy bear, lion or owl. Shape small pieces of dough as desired. To join shapes, moisten the pieces ;and press the edges together. Features can be added, with raisins or cherries for eyes. In a dry atmosphere# the sculpture will last up to two weeks. Tree ornaments and wall plaques can be made with a simple, inedible dough: Add a cup of water gradually to two cups of all-purpose flour and one cup of salt. Knead the dough five to 10 minutes until firm and smooth but not sticky. Plaoe in a plastic bag until \ready to use It can be kept for five days in the refrigerator. If it dries out, add a little -- water. To shape this dough, you can use cookie cut- ters or a candy mold. Before using molds, always wipe the inside surface lightly with cooking oil. Or invent your own decorations by rolling and shaping the dough. The children will have fun using their ` imagination and a little dough. There are two ways to harden this dough. One is to let it dry naturally on a screen so the air cir- culates around it. The second method is baking in an, oven no hotter than 175 degrees Celsius (350 Fahrenheit) on a foil- covered cookie sheet. Allow one half-hour for each quarter -inch thickness of dough or bake until surface is lightly browned. Possible finishes -in- clude acrylic paint, shellac and varnish over water color or egg yolk. Applying varnish or shellac to both sides of your decoration protects it against humidity. Wall plaques can be made by simply gluing decorations on a finished piece of wood. The 'decoration itself can be hung on a wall by in- serting a loop of wire into the back of the dough before baking. Tree swiped BRUSSELS - Christmas is almost here, and ap- parently -fir " the world are still here ,..with us. One recent evening, a car (with children in the back seat) was observed on the first line of Morris Township. The car stopped in front of a private gateway where two blue spruce trees were growing. A man got out of the car, chopped down one of the trees and took it with him. The spruce tree was almost four years old and the people who owned the two of them have now cut the other one, rather than have a repeat per- formance. Ironically, there were Christmas trees for sale nearby at the Morris Township waste disposal site for $5. Apparently that price wasn't cheap enough for theeculprits. A .... e from page 6A..
