'answer not 'far from

Saturday evening. ciood
people "from Varna and
from beyond have
donated Many of the
essentials and in so doing
have proved yet again the
real meaning of
-Christmas.-- -
There are so many
interesting legends
surrounding Christmas.
One 1 dug out concerns
the hanging of stockings,
the origin of which, I had
no idea.
We all know that the
original Santa Claus was
Sault Nicholas, sup-
posedly a fourth century
bishop of Turkey, well-
known in his lifetime for
his great generosity,
especially to children.
- According to legend, St.
Nicholas secretly tossed
bags of gold into the
homes of three dowry -
less girls when they
reached marriageable
age. On one ofl these
missions the gold. fell into
a stocking hung near the
chimney to dry. And so
began the custom of
hanging up stockings on
Christmas Eve. (With
gold at $600.00 an ounce
that would make a pretty
expensive short sock
today).
St. Nick, who lived in
Asia Minor, became the
patron saintof children in
Many lands, including
Greece, Holland, Russia
and Belgium. As his fame
spread throughout
Europe, our friend also
acquired several
colourful new names and
myths. He's called
"Jutenissen" in Den-
-mark; _ -"Pere--No
France and the "Al? of
Unreason" in Scotland,
but in Italy "he" is a
"she". Italian children
place their trust in
"Befana" an old woman
on a broomstick who
brings gifts to good
children and ashes to the
bad ones.

Skating
People have been ice skating for thousands of years.
The first reference to skating is found in Scandinavian
literature of the 2nd century. That's over 1,978 years
ago! About 800 years ago, there was an account of people
wearing skates made of bone in England. Seven hundred
years after that, in 1876, the very first artificial rink ever
was finally built in London, England.
People have enjoyed skating for a long time. The sport
has now evolved into two types, figure and speed. The
longest speedskating race in the world is the "Elfsteden-
tocht" in the Netherlands. This race is 200 kilometers
long! Twenty-five years ago a man named Jeen van den
Berg skated the whole distance in seven hours and 35
minutes. That's fast. He was in good shape._
The most famous figure skater ever is probably a
woman named Sonja Henie. She received more money
and fame for her graceful movements on ice thar. any
-other—i nd; ; dual—en--ea-r . .
career she had earned about 547,500,000!• This Norwegian
star was an Olympic Figure Skating Champion three
times. She starred in her own ice shows and made over 11
films.
The highest paid woman athlete in the world today is a
skater. Janet Lynn, a 27 -year-old United States citizen,
made more than $750,000 in 1974. She danced her way to
glo,
