Christmas in Polan�

the first star on Christ-
mas Eve, the daylong
fast of the Polish. Wigilia
is . ended and families
gather around the table to
.honor the Holy Child,
Before the traditional
supper is served, the
father of the house breaks
the Oplateki, . or-Christ-
nias wafers, w,hi.ch are
marked with Nativity
scenes and have been
blessed by the Church. He
then distributes the
nieces to all Tho are
present as tokens of
friendship and peace..
The meal that follows
has 12 courses, one for
each Apostle:1t is always
meatless, consisting
generally of borsch, fish,
cabbage, mushrooms,
almonds and pastries
made with poppy seed
and honey. In com-
memoration of thebirds
and beasts who gathered
at the Manger, the
children . dressed as
storks, bears, or
characters from the
Nativity go from house to
house singing earois,
They are rewarded with
gifts of food,
In many hoznes,
sheaves of wheat or other
grain from the harvest
are placed 'in the four
corners of the principal
room on Christmas Eve.
Straw is spread on the
floor and even under the
white cloth on the dining
table as a reminder of the

Come Alive nights
(Tuesday and Thursday)
are to meet at the church
at 7 p',rn. All the Sunday
School kids are also in-
vited. There is still.

things to be done. All
those with parts in the
play don't forget to bring
your lines.
On Christmas Day,
there will be a Christmas
film shown at Heather
Gardens at 3 p.m.
