Favor children, judge says
In his charge to new
board of education,
Huron County Judge,
F.G. Carter told board
members - that all ___con-
flicts must ideally be
resolved in favor of the
children.
Judge Carter presided
over the inaugural
session of the Huron
County Board of
Education Monday and
administered the oath of
office to .,the 16 trustees.
In his speech to the new
1981-82 board he urged
trustees to maintain the
interests of children in all
their decisions.
"That is the most
important reason for
your existence as a
trustee. No matter how
ornate the schools or
dedicated the teachers,
everything rotates
around the children," he
said. "The board may
think they have a
responsibility to the
ratepayer. That is true to
some extent but I am of
the opinion that. any
conflict in board affairs
must always be resolved
in favor of children."
Carter ------said ------that
economics have forced
education into a position
similar to that of the
Depression.
"Times are getting
tougher and as a child of
the depression I know
that there is no room for
frills in education. We
must get back to basics,"
he said. "We must get
across what is essential
so that when students are
finished Grade 13 in our
system they don't need an
English course to get into
university."
And while praising the
trustees for having the
initiative to stand for
public office, Judge
Carter cautioned the
board not to expect praise
for their diligent efforts.
"There are not many
thanks for this job," he
said. "Only the self
satisfaction you will get
for a job well done.
"Everyone should be
con mended _for standing
for public office because
it means a great
sacrifice. But I 'also think
u
that the spouses of the
trustees make a greater
sacrifice that is seldom
recognized."
He told trustees they
would face tough times in
the next term and wished
them success in coping
with the problems.
