She added, "This is an
excellent occasion to also
acknowledge the parents'
support, help from the
hospital staff, guidance
department at the high

leadership of -'Candy
Striper co-ordinator Barb
Hicks and her committee.
Mrs. Westlake stressed
the need for volunteer
work in a economically
tight time and said that,
"All volunteers are being
presented with
challenges."
To end her four-year
stint as Candy Striper co-
ordinator, Mrs. Hicks
said that her last year
had been the most suc-
cessful and outstanding.
Mrs. Hicks explained
that the initial growing
pains of the group had
faded and now the
teenaged Candy Stripers
showed nothing but en-
thusiasm, willingness
and co-operation in their
work.
The popularity of the
program blossomed and
she said, 'With the
arrival of summer, I had
never had such a willing
number of girls to work.
Some tried- -° to work
around part-time jobs
and all worked around
summer vacations.
A waiting list even
developed and out of
seven, unable to take part
in the Clinton program,
two are now participating
in the Seaforth Candy
Striper program. One girl
is from Brucefield and
the other from Zurich.
"This gives you an idea
of the enthusiasm these
.girls have, to serve,in out
community hospitals,"
she stres0d.
Mrs. Hicks con-
cluded,"It has' been a
privilege _and a valuable
experience dealing 'with
over 200 teens in the
community."
After remarks from
hospital administrator
.Doug Coventry and
hospital board chairman
Leen' Rehorsti Candy
Stripers Tina Strong and
Colleen DeJong
presented Mrs. Hicks
with an engraved silver
candy dish as a token of
appreciation.
The girls then read
letters from the patient
and a patient's family
member, relating the
kindness- bestowed to
them through Mrs. Hicks
and the Candy Stripers.
Mrs. Hicks showed
some slides on the Candy
Stripers work and af-
