Daniel Dong Plays Baseball
Daniel Dong watched while he stood on his base. Kim
was at bat, to the ball he would race. He'd catch a
fly ball, he was certain he would, for Daniel Dong thought
he was better than good. He heard the pop, the ball
soared in the air. I'll catch it, he thought, if I run over
there.
He leapt, he charged, he ran like a deer, he stopped
when he knew the ball was quite near. He took a step
back, to be in the right spot, the ball would land in his mitt
and be caught. But he tripped, he stumbled, he fell
on his side. 011 NO, the ball! ".Oh no," Daniel cried.
It plunked down beside him, he heard the crowd groan.
I missed it, I blew it, he let out a moan. The bases
were loaded, and I'm lying down. He heard someone yell,
"Daniel's a clown."
—Kim -ran, she-flew,-she--got--a-hemc run! Daniel Dong
thought -- baseball is fun??? Daniel got up, he trudged to
his base. He pulled his cap down to hide his dumb face. A
really mad kid yelled, "ban didn't try!" And Daniel Dong
thought, now Daniel, don't cry. I'm clumsy, a klutz, he
threw down his mitt. Daniel was having a baseball fit.
The bases were loaded, Dan trudged up to bat. He
tightened his grip, he lifted his nat. The pitcher pitched,
"Strike one," Dan heard. Someone yelled out, "Daniel's a
nurd."
"Strike two," oh no, I've got one more try. I'll hit it, I'll
hit lt, if I don't I will die. The pitcher pitched, Dan
swung, he hit! The ball soared in the air, would it land in a
He zoomed, he rolled, he made the first base. He
charged, he slid, a smile on his face. Second! And
third! He got a licime run! "Oh my," he puffed, "baseball
He looked in the field and saw a kid throw her mitt on
the ground, she looked pretty low. "Kim," he shouted,
Kim was his friend, "don't worry, okay? Don't worry a
bit. Can't catch??? So what! Can you ever hit."
"Right," she yelled, "it's only a game. Besides, Daniel
Dong, we're both the same."
After the game they weren't mad or sad. They were the
same, and that made them glad.
