Rev. Dr. Wad -del -Ward lectured in the
Main -s. Methedist church last Thursday
evg., hie Jecture being "A donkey -ride
from Dan to Beersheba." The church
was crowded, and the lecture was listen-
• ed attentively by all present, The col-
lections amounted to $30.
Baseball
Our boys "clone up" the Lucan nine
last Wednesday by a score a 31 to 22.
• The game was characterized by hard hit-
ting on both sides, and many fielding er-
rors were maie, the players not being able
to judge the ball on account of the wind.
• A. Stanley, of 111.104/15 umpired. the game
el gave entire satisfaction.

We have this week to reoord the death
of Mr. Edward Snell, which sad event
took placedtt his residence On Huron street
Sunday morning. Mr. Snell was stricken
' down a few weeks ago with Typhoid fever
and died from its effects. He was well
lmown and highly respected throughout
this neighborhood. He was e consistent
member of the Methodist church, and died
trusting iu the merits of a Crucified Sava
- lour. He leaves a wife and one Child to
mourn his loss.

Mr, John Renton, who has been away
for five weeks on a business trip through
Manitoba and tbe Northwest returned
home on Saterday evening last. As Mr.
Ranton's husiness was such that lie Dot
only travelled on the mainline of the C.
P. R. as far west as Calgary, but took in
all the branch lines, and frornthe ample op-
portunities', which he had says he had no
idea ofthe extent ofthe eountiy. He never
in his life before saw such fields ,of wheat
and other grain, that in fact the crops of
all kinds are splendid. He also states
that the Northwest is undoubtedly the
place for a person of limited means. Mr.
Renton from the present prospect of the
future of the country and from induce-
ments held out by firms in Toronto, he
has deciderl to make that part of Orteado,
his h o roe.
S, 0, E. Entertainment.
The entertainment in Drew's hall last
Thursday evg. under the auspices of the
S. 0. E. Society, was successful in nearly
every respect. The attendance was not
as large as expected, Oil account of the
lecture in the Main street Meth. church ;
but, notwithstanding, a very audience at.
tended, and pronounce the entertahnnent
as being first-class. The programme con-
sisted of two parts, and was so lengthy
that pa rt of it had to be ornmitted. Fax,
the comedian, was on the programme foar
times, but was encorea five times. The
College song by 'Messrs. Elliot, .Hairdon,
'Tait, Carling and Walters was well ren-
dered and the LEPE were heartily applaud -
ad. The nine little girle singing `Red,
White aid Blue," rendered their part of

der of the programme, consisting of read.
lugs, recitations, etc , is worth 'mention,

Goclerich held its civic holiday yes-
terday aud nearly all the residents of

St. Marys will have a baseball tour-
nament to -day. A. handsome silver
cup will be awarded the winning club.
A. few Exeterites took advantage of
the cheap excursion rates to visit Niag-
ara Falls and Grimsby Camp on Satur-
day.

ed and a match arranged with some out-

next Monday, where exciting races will

There now seems to be a probability

The members of the Trivitt Memor-
ial Church will hold a festival at the
residence of Mr. Taos. Case, London
Road, to -day.
The public schools in towns and cities
opened for the fall term last Monday.
The attendance in the Exeter school
was large for the first day.
The Truns was published earlier than
usual the past two weeks, and couse-
quently some correspondence was re-
ceived too late for publication.
The Southern Counties Fair, to be
held in St. Thomas this year, promises
to be far ahead of any previous year.
Liberal premiums are offered.
