This week, Pottle
Classes of students
selected at random are
taking?, tests that, will act
as a basis for establishing
Canadian student norms.
Students from selected
classes of grade nine to
twelve are writing the
Canadian Tests of Basic
skills and the Canadian
Cognitive Abilities test.
These tests will
measure individual
progress in school and
also the ability t%use and
manipulate abstract and
symbolic relationships.
The questions cover the
basic topics of
mathematics, reading
and writing.
By June the overall
Canadian results will be
available.. About 1Q,000
students from across
Canada are taking part in
the testihg. Our school
was chosen because of its
size.
The school keeps all the
data and also the question
books, which could be
used again. This project
costs nothing to the
school.
The students writing
Cthese tests will get their
omposition winners
. personal scores in
January or February.

Eight CUSS students'
won a total. of $54. in this
year's Remembrance
Day Literary Contest.
In the intermediate
division (grades 7, 8 and
9), CHSS had 2 second -
place Winners: Winners: Bill Sewitt
and Brad Lyon.
In the senior division,
(grades 10, 11 and 12)
best poetry prizes were
won by Rachel Battye
(1st); Paul Hartman
(2nd): and Christine
Carter (3rd).
Best essay prizes were
won by Brian Chessell,

Darryl Fox.
Honourable Mention
certificates were given to
Paul Hoggarth, Neil
Ryan, Scott Kay, Suzanne
Tamblyn, Ann Talbot,
Andrew Davidson, Jane
Coventry, Greg Proctor.
and Erin Phillips.
The eight winning
entries may be read in
the CHSS. library. Prize
money is available from
the students' English
teachers today.

Friday
CHSS's second dance
will be held this Friday
night, featuring the band
"The Cry", which has a
new wave sound and haye
just released their debut
album called simply
"The Cry".
Cost to bring the group
to CHSS was $1250 and it
is hoped that the dance
will gross enough money
to pay for the band as
well as make some
money for the school. The
band is certainly of high
enough quality to ac-
complish this task. /
Admission cost is/ $3.50
with Students card and $4
without.
Incidentally, the Music
Express, a rock
magazine, calls "The
Cry's" debut album "one
of the best to come along
in recent memory". The
band will be playing
Much of the material
from the album so
everyone can look for-
ward to an excellent
dance.

team. Since the practices
are after school and Doris
lives out of town, she has
to get a ride home.
Doris thinks that more
students do not get in-
volved in sports becauSe
they can't get tran-
sportation home and
school takes too much of
their time.
Doris has been playing
basketball for two years
_and she enjoys it because
it is competitive. Playing
sports Is also a good way
to make new friends, so
she is involved in bad-

Seniors Day
SEAFORTH - The town
with the highest per-
centage of senior citizens
in Huron County honored
the older generation on
Wedensday, December 3
with a sepcial Christmas
shopping day.
Seniors were able to
