OFA convention calls
for food strategy
In a paper called
"agriculture and food
strategy for Ontario" the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture last week
made several recom-
mendations to the
Ontario government.
They expressed the need
for clearly stated com-
prehensive guidelines for
the farming and SOod
processing industry in the
province. .
The Federation wants
government programs
and financing to promote
Ontario farm products in
the areas or production,
marketing, processing
and distribution. Half of
the food imported into
Canada, $2 billion worth;
is food that could easily
have been grown and
--processed in Canada., but
is not. A, committed
strategy , to promote
domestic • production to
replace imported items is
needed. Such a strategy
would mean a billion
dollar plus boost to the
provincial economy,
greater employment in
many food processing
and related industries, a,
stable food supply and
prices to the consumer,
and enhanced revenues to
the provincial treasury.
The Ontario Federation
of Agriculture recom-
mends a special fund of
$150 million per year for
the next ten years be
established to support the
programs required by
this strategy.

Huron's squash is biggest
Will the real world's
biggest squash please roll
forward.
Recently, in the
serialized history cartoon
It Happened in Canada,
credit for the largest
squash grown ever in the
world was attributed to
one E. Van Wyck of
Roland; Manitoba. His
weighed 353 lbs., and had
a "9 ft. girth." The feat
was accomplished in
1971.
A reader of the
Seaforth Expositor,
Terrence Hussey of
Egmondville, however,
has solid evidence that
Mr. Van Wyck's squash
was not the biggest ever.
The real world
champion squash grower,
it- seems, was William
Warnock, from near
Goderich who broke the
Van Wyck record not
once but thrice. In 1893
Mr. Warnock exhibited a

According to a yellowing

the turn -of -the -century
Goderich squash ,grower
shipped an even larger
one to the Paris World's

And that wasn't
enough, Mr. Warnock
took first prize at the St.
Louis World's Fair in 1904
with a 4031b. squash.
The magazine article
(the publication's name
is unknown) was written
by Iris Sparling, Mr.

is accompanied by a
