There appears to be no art or anguage so
universally used as a roeans Of expression as
that of music, and there are comparatively
few children who do not love to dance to its
motion, to sing happilywhile at play and
to loiter around the piano when there is
music to be hoard.
The sound of the hand -organ draws little
children to the windows and their seniors
stop to listen to the street band.
Many a heavy task is lightened by the

The study of music, as to ite disciplinary
effects upon the ercung mind, is, 1 think,
undervalued.
' The system of teaching it in our sehools,
fella frequently good, is not made sufficient -
4y concise or useful to an object. ,
Songs are taught to be sung on specie
occasions, but, as a rule, the music teacher
visits the school but once a week. Often
when he comes the children are weary, the
air of the school room is impure, there has
been little opportunity for physical activity,
and the voices are hoarse from the inhala-
tion of dust, and lifeless on account of poor
4, circulation of the blood. The pupils are
rnany times told to "sing louder,' and too
often the result is that young voices, natur-
ally so pure, sound harsh and tinmusicel.
So sharp a line is drawn between the
possibilities in the continued use of boys'
voices that they need to be handled with
peculiar care, while, athough there is a
period of change in the young girl's voice
it is almost imperceptible. It, too, requires
discreet treatment.
But it is not vocal Innen in particular to
which I wish to refer ; rather, to the study
of music as an art to be begun in childhood.
One frequently heara parents exprees
dread of their boys becoming musieians. If

as she reviews the events of the day, mar-

dom in thus allowing her child to see the
worst side of her nature.
While we thus deport ourselvea before
our children, we must not wonder at exhibi-
tions of temper displayed by them. We
have thrown away the rudder by which we
mighb have hoped to tea& them to ateer
their little barks safely through the seas of
perplexity and trial ; but how can we ex

poet to teach them self control when we are
wholly unable to control ourselvee ? Ex-
ample is everything, precept is nothing.
We must be what we wish them to become.
There is no pewee on earth equal to a
mother's influence in her everyday life before
her children. Tnere is a propensity born in
every child to think that whatever mother
does is right; and so long as the child is too
young to reason this will be its guide. But
the time will oome when wrong will be
wrong, even though the mother be the one
who commits it, but ere this the baleful in-
fluence will have done its work, and habits
bo formed which may last a lifetime.
When the ruthless hand of death snatches
away our loved ones, we remember, with
pangs of remorse, every hasty word and un-
necessary rebuke. This is but natural, and
yet bow much more poignant should be our
grief for hasty censure for those still alive,
who, perhaps, are destined to carry about
with them for many years the scars which
our words have made. The wound inay
partially heal over, it is true, but a surface
once deep marred will never be so smooth
and beautiful as before. Even the atone-
ment of an after life of perfect patience clan
never wholly undo the wrong.
Oh, that these words may meet the eye
of sonae happy yOung mother, clasping in
her loving arms a sweet morsel of a baby,
whe has never seen the shadows of a scowl
upon the face bending over him; and may
she see and understand what a wonderful
influence for good or evil lies in her conduct.
The life of those who have come to realize
their mistake too late to remedy its evils, is
before her, and if she will but be profited
by the experience of others, she may save
herself much humiliation and remorse.

could be afforded with perfect security for
leas than half the mist charged by old-lhae

with the most unscrupulous opposition it
has pluckily pushed forward, overcoming all
obstables placed in its way, and to -day is
pronounced a marvel of mimes, its system
and financial position being endorsed by the
best aotuaries on this continent. It has
paid for death claim's over five millions of
dollars, and at the same time acoumulated
nearly to millions of dollars in its Reserve
Fund.
Mr. Matthews' insurance is an illustration
of the small cost under the Mutual Reserve's
System as compared with other companies.
The sum total of payment by him on $15,000
insurance has only been $1,665. The same
amount under the old-line system would
have cost him 61,657. It will be seen, there •
fore, that the actual saving in cost amounts
Ito nearly ($3,000) three thousand dollars.

What do we seek most to control in a

emotions?
Might not, indeed, the whole Christian
life be summed up as one in whioh the
human being learns the power of real self
control?
Now there is, it appears to me, no one
study that helps the student with more
nicety to discipline his emotional nature
than that of music.
A mere loiterer in the realms of music

Never too strongly urge a child to study
