The Ontario NDP is mounting 4 Province - wide membership drive. Huron -Middlesex will Participate in this drive, Some door to door can- vaSsing will begin by November 22, Details on membership with the NDP c -au b obtained by writing Valerie Bolton, secretary, Huron- Mid.dlesex NDP, RR 1 Belgrave, Ontario, NOG 1E0. Anne -Rae Fishman from the Ontario NDP provincial office ex- plained the plans for the province -wide mem-, bership drive. The local membership committee will be holding a social at the end of the drive to wel ome new members to the party. ADP party picks officers Members of the Huron- Middlesex- NDP riding association gathered at the Clinton Public School on Thursday, October 30. A new president, Paul Carroll, and new vice- president, Tony McQuail, were elected. Five new resolutions were passed by the membership. A resolution on Bell Canada exchange areas was passed. It pointed out the limited dialing area for rural exchanges. Situations exist where neighbours are charged long distance rates. Some rural residents may find their nearest hospital, town, post office and local services are all long distance. The resolution calls for each exchange to have free dialing to all adjoining exchanges. Foreign land ownership was the next issue dealt with by resolution. Absentee corporate purchasing of Ontario farmland is having -a serious and detrimental impact on rural com- munities. This has serious implications on who controls the food land resources and food production. Immediate restrictions should be place to prevent absentee and foreign ownership of Ontario farmland. A time limitshould be imposed for present/absentee and corporate land owners to divest their holdings. Another resolution states that the preser- vation of the Ontario Health Insurance Plan should e a top priority. Acionbv.thP medical association and the op- ting -out of the plan by doctors are threatening health care in the province. The next resolution refers to the government aid toflling companies and corporations. The government should insist on part ownership as insurance on their in- vestment. It was resolved that financial supporters of the party have the membership fee waived if they wish to become members. A resolution on electoral reform, previously passed by the executive, was passed by the membership. The meeting closed with the showing of the film " Shutdown". The film details the plight of workers who are being laid off as plants are closed and who are losing their pensions after 30 years or more of work. Although the Ontario plant in the film was profitable, the company could not close its un- profitable p1afits in Prance 'or Mexico because 'of legislation in those counries. Ontario bas no such legislation to protect workers. iTEURSliA N VEIV/137iR 13,19$0 We reserve the right to limit quantities to normal family requrements! his w reas w GREAT BUY! 111 Shell "New", Cameo, 1 -ply, White CROP— JUMBO WALNUTS SAVE 64?
