Away batik in olden times when the town.
hip of Biddulph was a' Wilderness, the
flint settlers were ueneoes. These all Mlle
trona the slave states and it was oustomary
amongst them when south to hold an
animal barbecue. This old cuatent has
become obsolete in this section ; but about
two weeks ago Muses Turner, one of the
elate of the colored population of this
pleats, made known his iutention to hold a
real old genuine barbecue in hotter of old
folks,to bring back their memories to
happier days gone by„wherethey, hustled
among the sugar cane and corn ; and
picked the blooming cotton sod sucked
pereimone in the -moonlight. and chewed
sweet potatoes by the light of a pine stump.
To the fragrant smell of the palmetto
blossoms, those werelhappy daps for the
untutored blacks; but alas, those good Old
days have passed and gone, never to oome
baok again, as slavery is abolielled and the
black man in the south a now ten times
the slave he eyer was. Invitations were
issued by Moues to the entire population,
awn including Bertha. The feast was to
take place in Butler's grove and the day
appointed ;was August lst—Ernanoipation
day. Moges, assisted by old' aunt Sal had
made extensive preparations. The trench
was dug, the fireplace and weed was ready.
The colored brass baud from London Emit,
under the leadership of J3ab Pope, appear-
ed on the scene arrayed in their gorgeous
uniform of orange and green about 10
o'olock a, m., and the parade formed in
order, marshalled by old Calamity Butler
in front of Iliey's. in the parade was Mode
Hatch, ..4,:unt Jane, Aylmer, 1113/1, Black
Everat, Bertha, Jack, Peter Ned, Sal, the
Sawed Oil and Doo and the Lyieele follow-
ing up in therear. Old Calamity led the
procession, 'mounted astride of alone of
Peter Edwards' mules, which was ociaiPar-
isoned with a Alexicen saddle and a lideal
sack. Calamity ihimself being gorgeously
togged out in an old bast of American uni-
form of faded blue on his thick skull, the
discarded cooked hat of an Ainerioitn ad-
miral reclined completely covering his left
ear (he and the coops thought he was some
ptimplcing, but the opectators did not.) At
the oommand of Old Calamity the pro-
cession moved on, the band playing ,that
inspiring song, 'all the negroes will be at
the golden wedding.' One of the most
notable characters in the procession was
M0118011 lassoedastride of an ox, wearing a
Dolly Vardon hat, a,pair of zinc spurs and
a pair 01 opessumegarthre, displaying his
ivories like a drummer does his samples,
picking a banjo aud softly murmuring to
himself want all the children to follow
me.' Aylmer followed itntnediately after
perched on a pair of stilts, wearing a salva-
tion uniform, and a bandana handkerchief
around his neck and his blaok curly looks
encased in a mother hubbard sunbonnet,
playing on a month organ, 'There's room
for realty a mere.' Close behind Aylmer
came Bertha wearing a quilted petticoat of
sky blue scarlet, a Spanish sombrero on
her head and a pair of lawn tennis slippers
on her feet Her eyes were apparently
glued on Aylnaer as she beat with pleasing
variations on a pair of cymbals, (I am
thine and thine alone.) The rest followed
promiscuously deoked out in gaudy colors,
withthe exception of the lonsoli who
closed 'up the rear leading a poodle dog
fastened to a cable cord with a piece of
variegated seeesuoiter tied to his tail which
stood aloft like a flag pole no a 12th of
July oelebration. They arrived at the
grove where they were welcomed by about
two thousand spectators who had assembled
to witness their first barbecue. Old Aunt
Sal and Mosses prepared the feat which
consisted of roast coon, teller dog, ex tail
Soup and green peas. The rest of the
coons broke up iuto little groups and wan-
dered, aimlessly about seeking for diversion.
Everat and the Lynch sttuck a shady spot
under a beach tree and made love and
latia gagged in the latest improved Parisiau
style, while Bertha and Aylmer expeotorat-
edd in the same lenspiodor and were, so
sweetly mellow as to call forth many re-
marks. One passer-by was heard to say,
they ressmbled. crushed strawberry with
ice dream trimtnings. While Hatch and
Jane each with a hymn book he their hand
meauderecl up and down informing all the
white visitors that they hoped to meet
them at the °melee/ gates of the New Jeru-
salem, MeOarty the charioteer of Rag
Alley, perched on a hickory stump, heat a
tatoo Mt an old brass tea kettle. This was
the summons to dine and at the first stroke
the comet fleoked to the spread out like
recl nose topers to a gin bottle. After they
were all seated Old Calamity arose and
raising his hands heavenward and his
eyeballs into the roof of his head; invoked
a blessing from the' heppy regions undis-
°emceed in the immensity of expellee 'on
the feast. Aunt Sal arose and sang in a
sweet cootralto vole°, ,011 how I long to
get then Mosses, denim Sal's song, who
had eaten nothing for three days before,
sneaked over to the camp kettle and p111.

A meeting of our, citizens was held in
the Towle Hall last Friday evening to con-
sider the matter of fire protection for our
village. There was a splendid attendance,
and a lively interan was shown in the
matter. A. Company was formed with Mr.
G. Hess as (thief. Although the old. engine
has been laid by for some time, Monday
evening's !est showed that with a hundred,
feet or more of good hose good service can
be done with it yet. The next question
will be how about tanks, although there is
always any amount of water in private
wells, in case of fire, tue tenks woul8 be far
'handiest; three would be quite suffioient
for the meantime, one neer the Oommer-
clef, one near the Huron House, and
another in the neighborhood of the grist
mill woulcl be quite eonvenieut for the cene
tre portion of the town. It is to be hoped
that the tanks will reeky° a epeedy consid-
eration, new that the company is formed
they must have proper tools to work with:
and water advantages might as well be se -
_cured at once as we do not kuow at what
moment a big blaze will ocour. In a case
of this kind it is no use doing thinps by
halves but go right into the matter awl have
it done up proper while the "kettle is boil-
ing". Give the Company all the neoessar.y
requirements in case of fire, et will be
money well laid °tit, and then when all
that is found, if it is not asking too touch,
let our company be togped up in a good
showy uniform, so that Zurich can be as
well represented at a city tournament tie
any other town of its size or bigger.

It is said that a conspiracy to defeat the
Greenway Government has been discover-
edm Whmipeg, the Hudson Ray Com-
pany being the abettor& of it, it is charged.
As they are always uncovering politieal
surprises in the western province, this
last will not excite much alarm. Mr.
Greenway is attempting to injure the
national railway by calling in foreigners,
and he won't meet with much success as
Premier.
The Globe and other organs still keep
attacking the new Slinister of the Inter-
ior, despite the asteroval of the appoint-
ment by the people of the N. 'West, who
the new Minister will have the most to do
with, ar d amoug whom he has resided for
a number of years, The more manly way
for the Globe and other Reform papers
would be to stop their mud throwing, as
in the past this mode of warfare has done
them no good, but only served to make the
individual who they were bespattering
more popular. Now, if the new Minister
has been guilty of crime es they allege, let
their leader bring those charges against
Mr. .Dewdney on the floor ot the House of
Parliament, which is the most manly way
and the proper place, and -where Mr.
DewcIney will have a chance to defend
himself.
