Children and she must
always, leave a message
With someone about
where she can be reached
if not at home.
"You get used to this
Way oflife," she explains.
Betty says it can also
get pretty noisy in her
home.
"I'm f ous for saying
tone it w ,'' she laughs.
Her o family, con-
sisting f her.. husband,
only one
still living at home) and
her mother, have all been
supportive of her efforts
to run a receiving home.
"If the noise and
confusion starts to bother
Garth (her husband), he
goes to visit his parents
or for a drive," she ex-
plains.
Her mother, Mrs.
Taylor who is 84, takes
the children on walks and
knits things for there.
They all call her nana.
Her own children have
always helped with the
foster children. It may
have been difficult for
them at times, she
concedes, but it has also
given them more un-
derstanding of other
people. Her oldest
• daughter is now a social
worker with Family and
Children's Services and
her youngest daughter
says she hopes to be a
social worker some day
too.
"I remember one time
there were 10 or 11
children here, six of them
under five years of age.
We were just like an
assembly line getting
them ready for bed. Jane
(her daughter) got them
ready for their bath,
- .. Sandy (another
daughter) bathed them
and I put their pajamas
on. Sandy would open the
bathroom door and yell,
`Next!' It was kind of
funny," she recalls.
Betty often goes
'beyond the call of duty'
to help foster children.
She drives them to
doctors, dentists and
lawyers. She babysits for
other foster parents when
they need her. She even
takes whatever foster
children she has at the
time, on her annual two
week vacation. And she
keeps a variety of extra
gifts on hand around the
Christmas season `just in
case.'
"One Christmas eve a
mother and her baby
arrived here and I had to
dig under the tree looking
for presents to give them.
It wouldn't be a very nice
Christmas without
presents," she says.
All children up to age 16
coming under the care of
Family and Children's
Services_niust go through
Betty's receiving home
before being placed in a
more permanent foster
home. At present, there
are 55 foster homes in the
county and many more
acre needed according to
Louanne Taylor, who
worked with disturbed
children in.- London for
five years before coming
to family and Children's
Services. 'She says there
• are many myths
surrounding being a
foster parent that should
be dispelled.
She explains that most
foster children are not up
for adoption and that
foster parents don't have
to think that just because
they are fostering they
will eventually haIN to
adopt.
All children are
assessed by Family and
Children's Services social
workers and a
. psychologist to be
matched to the right
foster home.
Once the foster parents
receive their foster child
or children, they are not
left on their own. A social
worker is always in close
contact with them and
can.be called at any time.
Foster parents don't
incur any e*penses but
neither do they become
foster parents to make
money. They are paid so
much per day per child
