The Kinsman family received word of the death in Unity, Sask., of a niece, Mary Nelson. Mary was the former Mary Whiteman, daughter of John and Janet Whitetnan of Saskatoon, formerly of Tuckersmith analwas in her 78th yeark. Janet Whiteman was Earl Kinsman's eldest sister and her daughter Mary received her elementary education at., S.S. ..10.-.. Tuckersmith. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kinsman, who are on holiday in the west, were able .to attend the funeral last Wednesday. Munro wins award Alice Munro's book of short stories and Hal Lawrence's non-fiction book about the navy were named the best English- language Canadian paperbacks of the year. Monday. - The selections were announc��egd; at the fourth annual `Author's Awards dinner • for outstanding English paperback books, magazine articles and, short stories, sponsored by the Periodical Distributors of Canada. The award for paperback fiction marked the third literary prize for Munro's "Who Do You Think You Are", a collection of 10 short stories about a woman living in a small South- western Ontario town. Munro, a resident of Clinton, previously won the governor -General's Award and the Canadian Australian Literary prize. Lawrence's "A Bloody War", which won in the non-fiction category, describes the con- tributions of the Royal Canadian- Navy during the Second World War. Munro's book edged Katherine Govier's "Random Descent" about the struggle to keep a family together, while Lawrence's was selected ahead of "Bronfman Dynasty" by Peter C. Newman. Scrolls, and a total of S4,500 in prize money were awarded in; several categories.
