If you want to 'avoid
r Waking to the sound of a

your latest used car
purchase, check for liens
and security interests
'Wore you buy,
That's the advice of
Ontario's Ministry of
Consumer and Com
Ygercial Relations. The
Ministry warns that
buyers of used cars in
private sales must be
•
especially careful to
avoid • the few
scrupulous sellers who
may be in the market,
Unlike the registered,
car dealer Z -a person
making a private sale has.
neither a licence to lose,.
nor a business reputation
to protect.
In some cases, the
private seller may be"
deliberately -- or even
unwittingly - selling a
car' that is .subject to a
security interest.
For example, the seller
may have .purchasedthe
car- on "time , or a
previous owner might'
have purchased the car
on time without the.
knowledge of the seller.
The car might have
been used as collateral
fora loan by the seller or
previous owner. Or a
garage may be holding a

lien against the car 'for
unpaid repairs.
Refuse to buy if the
seller won't provide a.
signe. d statement that
guarantees there are no
liens against the car.
Better yet, check for
liens or security interests
on the car before buying.
To do this, go to the
branch registry office of
the personal property
se?urity registration
system nearest you.
These are located in. the
land registry ' office of
each county or district
town. ,
}fere, you will be put in
telephone contact with an
inquiry operator who will
enter your search into a
central computer file.
Check the : system for
liens on the vehicle in the
name of the owner and by
the serial number. Also
The quick way out
You've probably heard it. "If I have an accident, 1 want to be
able to get out quickly". Well, the fast way out is through the
windshield. Quick, but deadly. And none of us would chose
it. Imagine sprinting, at full speed, head first into a steel post.
You'd never do it would you? Yet you take
the same chance by driving only 15 miles
per hour without a seatbelt on. And at 30, i
the impact is 4 times greater.
Remember, 92% of all car accidents
are caused by human error.

Enstire that the car's.
