Energy has published a
study calked Subdivisions
and Sun, which deals with
use of passive solar
energy in subdivisions.
Passive solar energy
providesan easy, low
cost way to reduce
energy +costs in . sub-
divisions and make new
homes more marketable.
No expensive equipment
is required since passive
solar is simply the light
and heat received in a
house without use of
special solar collectors or
shortage systems.

Three consulting firms,

the Ministry to prepare
subdivision plans which.
incorporated factors
affecting passive solar
gain. These include
housing designs, road
layouts, lot
arrangements, con-
figuration on lots, and
landscaping.

Ontario Hydro gets
first electric car
TORONTO: - It was a
new vehicle introduction
without the usual Detroit -
style hype -- no marching
gands, girls in ikinis, or
Madison Ave ue ad-
vertising.
But then, it was no
ordinary vehicle, either.
Ontario. Hydro
chairman Hugh
Ma caul ay decided on a
discreet debut for the new
model, • a.. utilitarian -Van
that is the first of 12
electric powered vehicles
to be tested by Hydro
over ::the next two years.
To mark the occasion, he
invited Premier .William
Davis to take the rig for a
spin around the
Legislative Building at
Queen's Park.
"It goes very smoothly
as long as you don't ac-
celerate too rapidly," the
premier proclaimed after
the road test. "it's
comfortable, has good
visibility and is fun."
The $16,000 van, dubbed
the C-360 and built by
Marathon Electric
Vehicles Inc. in Ville St.
Leonard, Quebec, is a six -
wheeled, three -axle van,
powered by 16 six -volt.
batteries, with a top "
speed of 68 kilometres an
hour. It has an operating
range of up to 97 km (60
miles) and can be
recharged overnight.

Hydro's fleet of 1.2

Mr. Macaulay .said ,that ,
the test program is
designed to investigate
the impact of electric
vehicles on Hydro's
electrical system and
determine the viability of
electric vehicles in the
Ontario Hydro fleet.
He told newsmen who
attended the van's un-
veiling that as petroleum
prices'' continue to
skyrocket, electric
vehicles could some day
play a major role in
transportation.
"Who better to operate
them and find out what
the costs are, what the
problems are, than the.
biggest electrical utility
in the country -- namely
Ontario Hydro?" the
chairman asked.
You can save gas — and so
save money -- by making sure
your engine is in proper tune.
Regular tuneups, as recom•
mended d iy the car manufac-
turer, can save you as much as
10 percent on gapoline costs.
Ontario Energy Minister
Rgbei t Welch.
"'Simple steps, such as
placing major living
areas on the south side,
andless used spaces s>ich
as closets and prages on
the nQrt,ean make a big
difference to the amount
of, energy a house uses,"
he added.
Intelligent' landscaping
can help prevent
overheating in summer
and provide shelter from
winter winds. Arranging
as zany streets as
possible in an east -west
direction and providing
arrower ri ad
allowances would allow
the, greatest number of
units to have unob-
structed southern ex-
posures.

Single pane glass has little insulation value.
The, addition of a storm window only increases
it to an R value of a mere 1.8.W1fdOW QUllt
with a single pane of glass provides an R 4.25.
That's over four times the insulation value of a
single window. Over twice that of a double
pane window. Consider the fuel conserved.
And the cash you'll save.
