speaking:
The forests of Ontario fall into three distinct
groups and are largely responsible for our
distribution of wildlife. Moose, for 'instance, are
creatures of the Boreal Forest regions, while
deer inhabit the Deciduous Forest areas. If you
look at a forestry map, it is very easy to deter-
mine the range of these and other animals by
examining the forest types in the area. Boreal,
Deciduous and Great Lakes -St. Lawrence Forest
Regions are the three types we have in Ontario.
The Boreal Forest is the most northern forest
in the world, is circumpolar and is dominated by
coniferous species. Low lying wet areas are
typically covered with black spruce, tamarack
and white cedar, while drier sites are usually
covered with jack pine, white spruce, balsam fir,
poplar or asPens. Large stands of a single tree
species are found, but a mixture is more the rule.
The Great Lakes -St. Lawrence 'area is an
ecotone, or a region where the boreal forests of
the north and the deciduous forests of the south
meet and overlap. This area sees even more of a
mixture and the maples, birches and beech trees
start to gain dominance. Because " the wider '
variety of tree species available provide dif-
ferent cover types, a more diverse cross .section
of wildlife is usually available.
As you move farther south, the presence of
conifers decreases and the maples and beech
trees become dominant interspersed with other
species such as butternut, walnut, hickory, etc.
In Ontario, this forest type only. occurs in a few
places in the southern -most tip of the Province.
Rondeau Park, Point Pelee and the Fingal
Wildlife Management Areas are good places to
observe this type of forest.
While forest . types dictate to a large extent
which forms of wildlife are present, there are
other factors which must be taken into con-
sideration. In order for wildlife to survive, their
habitat must provide them with food, shelter and
water. Large mature stands of .forests provide
a cover, but may produce little actual food while
open areas .'may produce food but have no
shelter. A mixture of. these areas coupled with a
supply of water produce excellent habitat for
birds and animals and this is where you will find
most of your wildlife.
- We have 'been conditioned to regard - for -est.
fires as terribly destructive things, but they are
almost- essential for wildlife survival. Fires
create areas of forest disturbance and open up.-.. _
mature stands for regeneration. Certain species
of plants and trees hav't adapted to forest fires
and others depend on them for reproduction. The
jack pine, for example, needs temperatures of at
least 140 degrees<F to cause the cbnes to open and
release the seeds. Records over the past 60 years
also indicate that fire conditions are cyclic with a
peak season every 13th year. There are,
however: exceptions, and I'm sure'this past
summer was one of them.
Other "forest 'disturbances" also stimulate
regeneration providing food and cover.
•Infestations of spruce bud worm and floods are
two examples. Logging, if carried out properly,
can also , increase wildlife habitat, or it can
almost destroy it completely.
The next time you're out travelling, pay a little
attention to the trees you are driving past. You'll
soon be able to recognize what forest type it is,
and be able to impress your friends by ex-
plaining it to them It's a great way tb kill some
time on a long trip and you als1 find yourself
looking at the country with a different point of
view.
