The program will include instruction in sports and movies. Vanastra Centre will be offering a course in Junk - crafts. beginning Thur- sday evening October 23rd f ram 8:30 - 10 p.m, Classes will be limited to 15 participants.. For registration or in- formation, please phone 482-35744. The Vanastra Public School began a pool program on Friday, October 3rd, and Seaforth Public School also started a similar program last week. Bingo Winners this past week (Sept. 30th) were: first share -the - wealth, Mary Steep, Clinton; second share- the-wea10, Annie Sallows, Vanastra ; and third share -the -wealth, Vera Marsh, Wingham; and the jackpot was won by Mervin Hodgert, R.R. 1, Bornholm. Christian Church To the tune of "Onward Christian Soldiers", the colour party from Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Pathfinders last Sunday , led the eight gr" cups from . Sunday .. School up to the Lions Club down the aisle to begin the 200th birthday celebration of the founding of .Sunday School. . Several members of the church were dressed . in old costumes and the church was appropriately decorated with streamers and balloons, thanks to Pam and Melinda Mantel and friends. Wanda Goulding gave a narration on the history of the Sunday School and Jan Ferguson read a Bible Story. Our sincere thanks to Chris -Bylsma for her beautiful singing and guitar playing. The Sunday School children presented the church with two banners to be hung in the church; they also presented pastor Mantel with a fragrant candle to be lit ever-y-,-Sunday--to - remind _. us that Sunday School is an important part of the church. The winners of the poster contest were: Kim Dixon, Ronnie Ferguson, Shawn Bonte- Gelok, John Haskett, Mary Mellor and Michelle Govier. After the message "Every community needs a Sunday School," the children outdid,the adults in singing "Halleluhia, Halleluhia". Sincere thanks to all the ladies for the soup, sandwiches and cakes. Next Sunday, don't forget that Sunday School will be at 10 a.m. and Thanksgiving Service to follow at 11 a.m. Corrie Na ak and .Pete. Mantel will be attending a Congregational' Evangelism Training Program in Mississauga this week. Public School We have already come to the end of the first month of this school year. On Thursday October 23rd, an Open House will be held at the school from 7 - 9 p.m. Parent -teacher interviews will not be held at this time. Private interviews will be scheduled- on Wednesday November 26th. If, for some reason, you would like to meet with a teacher before the date, please feel free to phone the school at 482-7828 and make arrangements for such a meeting. Wed- ding Anniversary of Mrs. Russo's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Werbowecki on Oct. 4th. Their actual Wedding , Anniversary is Oct. 20th. Mrs. Wer- bowecki will be 80 years old on October 6th. A receptionvas held at the Church of the Transfiguration in Kit- chener, where a .mass was celebrated , and dinner and dance followed. ' Last weekend, Nancy Thiebeault and Brandon fend Chad along . with Glenda Gardiner went to the Ripley Fair and Brandon . Gardiner won 1st prize in: the -frog jumping contest, while his brother Aaron was 2nd, Happy birthday to Jeff Ryan and Jeff Dixon, who celebrated their bir- thdays on the same day, Thursday, October 2nd. The Tony Jeacock family visited Sarnia on Sunday. Sandy McLachlin's sister; Debbie McNichol from Blyth., visited for the weekend. On Saturday evening seven couples went bowling with the men winning the first game, but the women 'won the second and the overall points. Brownies After the regular opening the Brownies and' Tweenies divided into groups, to work on their Golden Bar, Golden Hand, and Tweeny. Before the girls can be enrolled they must know their promise,- ----motto, law, meaning of the smile and good turn, Grand Howl -and be able to print their name .and address. This takes a lot of effort and practice, so parents you can help by Quitting your child, Enrollment date will be set up - shortly. Guides The Guides also en- joyed the- movies ".Mo.wgli's Brothers" and "Rikki Tikki Tavi" last week. They also, enjoyed a half hour of games in the auditorium. The Guides are also working on preparing for their enrollment to be scheduled shortly. Lioness On Thursday, October 2nd, the Lioness enjoyed a fun night at the Vanastra Recreation Centre with the Lions Club catering their dinner. There was an executive meeting on Tuesday October 7th and their next business meeting will be Thursday Oct. 16th. By Jim Fitzgerald. • MORE SHOPPING - Grocery store shoppers in Clinton will enjoy a much bigger selection and nearly twice the floor space after expansions -are carried out at the two present supermarkets in town. + + + IGA, EUPANDS A ',large addition on, the Clinton IGA Food Liner `will just about doable that store's retail selling space for the Ozzie Kuenzig family who operate the store. Con- struction, on the large new addition by Cale Doucette, at the corner of Mary and King Street, started in September and work may be com- pleted by November. The Kuenzig family leases the store from Lawrie Slade of Clinton, who owns the property. Mr. Slade bought the former gas station at the corner and _ tore it down, to make way for the addition. + + + PARTS DEALER MOVES - Clinton Auto Parts, a joint business run by Paul Kerrigan and Dean Ried, moved out of the corner building which was subsequently torn down for the IGA. It has moved next door to the buidling formerly occupied by Chuter Plumbing and Heating. Proprietor Tom Chuter has semi -retired and will look after the town's building permits. MORE GROCERIES - Clinton's other major food,retailer, Corries Red and White on Ontario Street, are nearly halfway through their ex- pansion that will increase their square footage by about another 75 per cent. Being built by Don Bell, the building will be ready for customers sometime in October. + + + ROYAL LIVING - After living in cramped quarters for the past 15 years, the Royal Bank officially unveiled their their new building at an open house on September 25. The new spacious 4,10Qgare foot building has all the modern banking conVen'ences and --is nearly double the old 2,500 square foot building at the main corners built in 1908. Manager Iner Smith showed customers through the new $250,000 bank which features an. _ early -bird teller, private offices and ample staff room. + + + ANSTETT EXPANDS John Anstett of Anstett Jewellers has purchased the building recently vacated by the Royal Bank and has started extensive renovations to change it into one of. the finest such stores in the area. Anstetts plan to move across the street from their old quarters, rented from Bill Smith, sometime in November. + + +- MORE BANKING - Not to be outdone by the Royal, the Bank of Montreal has not only doubled their space, but will open an hour earlier in the morning as well at their main corners location. Being built by Cale Doucette of Clinton, the major expansion should be ready for an open house sometime in October. As well as a new entrance, the bark features improved customer access and more private office space for the various bank officers. + ++ OL* PRO GONE - Clinton's Old Pro, Fred "Doc Jackson, has retired and sold old his small engine repair business to Roy Vodden who took over the business earlier this summer. Vodden, who will call •the business Royal Maintenance, will operate the shop just south of the Highway 4 bridge, and will also have bran- ches in Bayfield and Drysdale. + + + NEW GROCERY STORE - Wayne Smith, a long-time Clinton area businessman, has pur- chased the former Victoria Variety on Highway 4 south in town from Eleanor Swan. He will reopen the store later this fall as a small convenience and gear store after extensive renovations. Craig is seeking employment elsewhere. + + + NO MORE FRILLS - After only three months of business, the Frills and Fancies Boutique on Isaac Street, which featured handmade crafts, has closed. The closure came aftern one of the owners moved away from the area. +++ NO ICE CREAM - And right next door, Larry's, an ice cream emporium operated by Larry Bunn has closed its doors for the winter. Brad Kennedy • + +. f , ' NEW STOVEWORKS Andy Smith formerly of Goderich and Steve Caved of Holmesville have bought the former radar dome at Vanastra, and have opened stoveworks building and custom steel fabricating shop and store. Smith and Caven Enterprises Limited will manufacture and retail downdraft stoves from their new premises from the building with the second floor serving as the retail outlet, and the first floor as the manufacturing facilities.
