She's a modest 90 year odd
by Shelley McPhee
She's , a modest. lady. She's not a publicity
seeker and would just as soon. have let her bir-
thday passed by without a peep.
That wasn't the way , it was to be and Mrs.
Ethel McDougall has beeen busy visiting with
friends and family and receiving cards and gifts
'since early in the month in celebration of the 90th
birthday.
"They've got mr so bewildered with allthis
fussing," Mrs. McDougall shook herhead.
But Mrs, McDougall has had a great birthday
celebration that wound up on 'Friday with a
special open house at Holiday Home in Clinton
where she resides.
The special, afternoon also celebrated the 78th
birthday of Harold Munnings and the 88th bfr-
thday of Russell White and was hosted by Mrs.
Van Dam me, owner of Holiday Home. ,
Mrs. McDougall was also honored at a surprise
birthday party earlier in the month at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Grosse in Auburn. Over
40 relatives attended the surprise gathering for
their aunt and grandmother and according to
Mrs. McDougall, "They weren't too worried
about my heart."
Mrs. McDougall enjoys the best of health and
is proud of the fact that she's only been in
hospital once in her life. However, now arthritis
inh'Mrs. McDougall's knee keeps her ata slower
pace of life: But this 90 year old is one of the
sharpest euchre players at Holiday Home and
enjoys occasional walks uptown to pay her bill's.
She admits that even though she's not much of a
television fan, she likes to see all the high drama
on her favorite soap, The Edge of Night. .1
She hasn't thought much about reaching such a
milestone in her life and said, "I want to stay
young all the time."
"I guess I've gotten lazy now, but I've been
used to working all my life," she suggested as a
key to her longevity.
"It's.important to keep on the go and do lots of
hard work," she advised.
Mrs. McDougall's had an active life. She was
born in Mount Forest on .September 26, 1890 and
later moved to Seaforth where she raised two
sons, Elmer, now of Cambridge and Ken of
Auburn, after her husband died.
She has lived in Clinton for the past four years

McDougall a happy birthday and sent her over 60
cards. ►
"There are too many to put out," • she ex-
claimed, "And I really don't like all this
publicity."
But Mrs. McDougall's an easy going lady with
a sharp sense, of humor. Despite her objections,,
Mrs. M&Dougalf thoar"oughly enjoyed the birthday
celebrations and with a sly look in her eye stated,
"Now, I hope I. get two full pages in your paper."
