I have just received some information from
the Ministry of Natural Resources which will be
of interest to coon hunters in the area. It deals
with the interpretation of the laws concerning
the hunting of raccoon at night.
Apparently in the past, coon hunters have
assumed that since they had a license to hunt at
night, they were not required to case their guns
while moving from one area to another in their
vehicles -----after dark. This is not correct and
Ministry personnel are prepared to lay charges
-against anyone found with, an uncased gun in
their ca: after dark.
One other point of contention' is,the caliber of
rifle used. The lar states that my "22 caliber
low power" rifles may be used. pparently, coon
hunters have been using .22 magnums, .22
Hornets, etc. calling them "low power": The
Ministry of Natural Resources has resolved to
interpret ".22 low power" as 22 rim fire long rifle
as the most powerful cartridge that can be used,
so, if you have a magnum, you better start
leaving it at home.
' -As always, these changes. are a result of some.
people abusing privileges or hiding behind
technicalities of the law. The job of enforcing the
game laws is . tough enough as it is, so when
people start testing the outer limits of the laws,
stricter interpretations can be expected. Just be
advised that Conservation Officers have stopped
issuing warnings concerning these offences, and.
started handing out summonses.
If you are one of the lucky ones who happens to
-bag a deer this fall, I hope you'll be prepared for
it and know what to do. Removing the- entrails
from a deer and skinning it is essentially no
different than doing, a rabbit, but the size of the
job often sends the novice into a panic. If you
carry a few simple items with you, the job can be
dcne easily and with very little mess. The only
things you need are a good knife, a piece of cord
(butcher cord is good), a green garbage bag, and
one of those little "towelettes" they hand out in
restaurants.
When your deer is down in the bush, the first
thing you must consider is to get the entrails out
to ,start the cooling process. Slashing the throat
wide open is -not- necessary as your deer will
probably have bled all it's going to by the time
you get to it. Therefore, cleaning it and getting it
out of the burn is the only thing .you have to
concern yourself with.
'Start by inserting the knife under the tail and
cutting around the anus. being careful not to cut
the intestine. This can then be pulled out slightly
and tied off with a piece of cord. The genitals
should then be cut free and tied off in a similar
manner. Once this is done, the basic job can
commence.
With the deer on its back, slit the abdomen
open to the bottom of the rib cage and to the
pelvic bone. Be careful not to cut internal
organs. If you reach into the cavity and try to get
your hand into the chest area, you will feel the
diaphragm, which must be cut free around the
entire bod Then, and I hope you've rolled up
your sleevs, you must reach up as far into the
neck as possible and sever the windpipe and
esophagus. •
Next turn your attention to the other end and
work the intestines (and tied off~yanus) and up
into the -body cavity_ Da.likewise to the genital
tract. If everything goes right, you should be
able to roll your deer over on its side and
everything will pretty well fall clear. Now the
reason for the garbage bag is evident.
The liver, heart and kidneys are excellent
eating and should not he discarded. The plastic
bag makes it easier to carry them out. Just clean
up your hands with .the towelette, drag your
catch out of the woods, and you've got a winter's
supply of fine eating.

Birds soar again
The Clinton Bluebirds
have done it again.
The .perennial champs
of the Clinton Men's
Recreational Fastball
League won the chirn-
pionship for. the fifth.year
in a row by- defeating
Merners 3-1 last Thur-
sday .night to win the
championship series two
games to one.
But the task wasn't
easy for. the Birds, as the
"never say die" Merners
never gave up and the
final series was a hard-
fought affair with all
games close.
The Bluebirds. won the
opener on September 15
by a close 6-5 score, but
Merners carne fighting
back to take the second
game 6-5 and then lost a
heart -breaker of a thrid
game by a 3-1 count.
Merners had advanced
to the final by virtue of
their semi-fiunal win over
Lobb's Caseys, while the
Birds gained a bye into
,the final because of their
fisrt place standing at the
finish of the-- regular
season.
The players wish to
thank all their loyal fans
and sponsors for their
support this summer,
which' saw the addition of
a new team, Excello-
Elmhaven, and the
revamped Merners, as
well as the old gang on
the'Birtds.
The league also wishes
to express their ,sym-
pathy to the Fleming
Colts, many of whom play
in the fastball league as
well,' and wish to
congratulate them for
.such a great season by
making the senior "C"
