Now I know why cowboys always
,,alk so funny. I always, thought
their boots weren't broken in, their
spurs were clanking together or
their chaps were done up to tight.
But no, it has to do with their
transportation, the -trusty old
horse.
I've never had a bullet through
the shoulder, or held a six-shooter.
I've never been inla duel, a round-
up, a showdown of a Shoot-out, I've
never ridden on the dusty old cattle
trails, robbed a train, rustled
cattle, or had a shot of Red Eye.
But I know what it feels like to be
a cowboy. I've ridden -the trusty old
horse.
• Well, he really wasn't all that
trusty and I really didn't ride the
'creature, _hut I did walk like a
cowboy at the end of it all.
The Sunday afternoon adventure
wasn't anything 'like those exciting
horsey rides at Woolworths. The
real thing was a terrifying and
painful experience.
Perhaps if my horse had had a
-nicer name he would have acted.
better, butmy chestnut steed was
called Butch. - -
People are supposed to call their
dogs Butch, not their horses.
Horses should be named Fury or
Midnight, Stardust or Dynamite,
Golden 'Girl or Champion, but not
Butch. How degrading can you get.
So it's no wonder that old Butch
was such a lackadaisical creature.
But nevertheless, ,Butch was
quite a challenge to ride. Just

trying to keep him going was
almost an impossible task itself.
Butch would have. been quite
content to stand on the trail all day,
chewing,. on grass and twigs and
watching the birds.
I showed Butch who was boss
though.- I yelled, I jabbed and1 a
tugged as the old boy and usuall I \
won out i the end and off we'd tr t.
But Butch wasn't to be outdone arld
when he got his gumption up would
begin his bottom bruising trot. I'm
sure he knew I was in pain for soon
he' had he own version of the fox
trot, three slow steps and nine
bouncing trots.•
Well, at least he was moving.
• Until the group decided to ride up
the hill. Butch pulled a real ornery
here, wouldn't move and munched'
on berries instead. I was deter-
mined to control this animal and
tried by best horse maneuvers, but
• Butch was boss. He quickly "fixed
my wagon" by half-heartedly
rearing, just enough to scare the
• daylights out of this cowboy.
• We walked most of the way back
to the stable from that point on, or
• should I say, I pulled and he
resisted, just like a mule. And then
the creture had the nerve to•nuzzle
up to me to say goodbye.
•Butch's memory will stay with
•me for a longtime, tn fact
evefytime I attempt to sit down.
But now I know why Waylon and
Willie sing, "Momma don't let your
• babies grow up to be cowboys."
