For the past two weelte, Zurich anl
vicinity has been infested by professional
tramps. One of them in particular, went
the rounds asking for money to purchase a
wooden leg. He is au old time applicant,
and professes to be an old soldier. This
assertion we do not doubt, but as far as
money for a wooden leg is concerned, leis
appearance and conversation lead us to
believe it is whiskey money he is after.
Zurieh citizens are always willing to extend
their aid to a charitable purpose, butien-
posters, in tho shape of one -legged whiskey
barrels and professional trampe rete, will be
given a wide berth after this.
On Elide,/ last what might have proved
et very diresetrous fire was prevented at the
Zurich bakery, by Mr. C. Eilber, proprie-

lire meg:Dated the ,furnaee is only one
brick thick, and the woodwork enclosing is
almost tonching the furnace The brielc-
work got so hot as to iguite the wood which
WRS soon in a blaze, and was first discovered
by Mr. S. Gottchalk. Mr. Elber had only
left the oven a short time previ'Onsly. If
timely assistance hal not arrived, the
greater part of our village, wcaild bave been
laid itt ashes, as the bakery is situated
almost iu a block of frame buildings.
When we nonsider tho havoc a fire could
make with a high wind, amongst a lot of
frame building, it ought to open the
eyes of our citizens to the fact that in stieh
33 ease, oar fire protection would not amount
to e roll of pins. If all the water and pile
in the Yillege Were brought into requisition,
and mon' to use them, it would avail
nothing it Ruch a conflagration should
happen, De: none too soon to look alter
fire protection for our village, and it
would be money well spout if we had a good

The M. P. P. of South Huron.
To the Editor of the Exeter Times.
SID.. —In your last issee a person under
the nom de plume of "Temperance First"
Vainly endeavors to explain the position
of Mr. Bishop, M. P. P, of South Huron
in connectiou with the reeene appointrneet
of License Inepector for South Huron.
Firstly, he says 0. 11. Sprague for the last
two years has tried to do his whole duty.
Thie ie not a fact. HOW many persons cli31
he prosecute in Bayfield, Brucelield,Zurich
Kippen and Ecensall ? Every person with-
in the riding knows : that some he hound-
ed out of the county, and others were let
go scot free. Secondly, he says that the
temperance party met twice at the soliel-
tations of Mr. Bishop,:and recomended N`1,1e
Sprague. Does any eeesonable person
consider Arehey such a blockhead as to re-
commend Mr. Sprague to the Government
as the choice of such holeetnd corner meet
ings as those held at Exeter and Hensel'?
All .told there were about 19 voters at
Hensel' and these :teem:teed the audacious-
ness to dictate to Mr. Bishop and the gov-
ernment as to whom they should appoint.
Mr. Bishop never said he would see that a
man so recommended would be appointed.
Thirdly, he says the government and Mrs
Bishop promised Mr. Sprague the appoint-
ment owing to his being a good officer. As
far as Mr Sprague's abilities as Inspector
go, the public have only to guage him by
his past record ; and in my opinion it is
such a record as will stand but little chal-
lenging, notably his prosecution of the
functions of the Scott Act. Indeed, as
far as his administering justice to a British
public he lacks ability. Fourthly, lie says
Kr Sprague was dismissed. In the name
of common sense what ignorance "Temper
ance First" does display. Mr Sprague
was not appointed under the liquor lieenee
Act of Ontario, consequently his clismissal
as Inspector under the Scott Aet was un-
necessary ; he was diemissed by the intel-
ligent public of Soeth Huron on the 19th
April last. .Appointments aza dismissals
ere not brought about as easily as 'Tem-
perance 1st "-imagines ; nor perhaps not
es fast as he despatches business. He
says that these meetings were called at •
the suggestion of Mr. Bishop, and that Mr
Bishop was present ; and that, after hie ,
leading the temperance vote around by the
nose as long al suite(7 his purpose, ha de-
serts them ; all of which exceeded in
treachery the acts of any politician' he
ever knew. "Temperance lst" bi. tb.e last
sentence displaps enough: ignorance to
qualify him for President of the Ontario
Lime 'Kiln Club, or leadeieof a Ztfu Gev-
ernment. Ile must be very easily led by
the nose, and I think he should throvv off
that cloak he assumes to -wear, as he is- ae
disgrece to it. At the temperanee 11304-
ing-held in Exeter, before the lad loeal
elections, Mr. Bishop was present to give
an account of himself, and announcecll
what he intended doing ba, the future.
And this is what we find him saying:
"Gentlemen, when I want a drink I do
not go in by the beck door, but go in by
the front,:walk up to the bar, take a drink
like a man nerd pay for it." And after his
election what did he say at a temperance
meeting in Exeter ? ; " G.entlernen, at
the last election You made me ride the
whiskey horse and you know how well I
got there." This does 000look like lead-
ing the temperance voters arouncl_ by the
nose, aud if 'Temperance 1st" wes.so led,
it was not necessary to have him attached
with cable, as an ordinary spider web
wont(' have answered the purpose.
