The small game season opens September 27th
and licenses are available now. The Post Office
also has the Migratory Game Bird permit which
you will need if you are a duck or woodcock
hunter. Leaving your permits till the last minute
can result in a frustrating run around or the
necessity of missing out on some prime hunting
time the first day.
There are also a few laws to remember when
duck hunting. Shotguns used for migratory game
bird hunting must not be capable of holding more
than three shells in the chamber and magazine
combined. This is usually achieved by placing a
metal, plastic, or wooden plug in the magazine,
but is only legal if it cannot be removed unless
the gun is dismantelled.
The other thing to remember concerns the
transportation of game. All migratory game
birds must have at least one fully feathered wing
attached to the carcass when being transported
and it can only be removed when the bird is
prepared for immediate cooking or after the bird
is taken to the residence of its owner for
preservation. This is an important feature to
remember if you do any field preparation of your
catch.
If you happen to be one of the hunters selected
to fill out a survey form this year, please be as
accurate and as prompt as you can. It helps to
keep a record in the space provided on the back
of your Migratory Game Bird permit and also
makes a nice keepsake for future reference. It
also makes for more accurate results for the
survey which is essential to determine proper
seasons and bag limits.
When it comes to knives, everyone has their
own preference but I've found a company that is
putting out a product that is hard to beat. Zepf
Custom Knives is located in Waterloo and is
producing a line of knives of enough different
sizes and sbap''s to suit almost everyone. Don't
let the `Custom' label scare you however. Zepf
knives are meant to be used, not looked at, and
the bulk of their line is priced at under $20. These
knives are "razor sharp" when they come from.D.
the factory and are manufactured from a good
quality steel that is easy to keep that way. The
handles are not fancy micarta, etc., but a. good
functional hardwood designed to last. I'd be
afraid to take some of the fancy knives produced
today into the bush in case I lost it, but that's not
the case with a Zepf.
One of the best recommendations a t of can get
is widespread use by experts in that field. I'm this
case, trappers are using more Z pf kffl es every'
year and I don't know of any other profession
that uses a hunting or skinning type knife in a
bush situation more than a trapper in this day
and age. I've used mine on everything from
muskrats to black bear and I don't think I'll ever
use anything else. If you're interested, contact
