Lioness plan 50's anniversary dance
On September 20th, the
,Vanastra & District
Lioness Club will be
celebrating their first
anniversary by hosting a
50's dance at the
Vanastra Recreation
Centre.
- Tickets are available at
the door or from any
Lioness member. Music
will be provided by a
band which specializes in
4111 music of the 50's. There
will be. various contests
with prizes and a buffet
meal at the end.
Although it is just a
yeas ago on September
14th that the Vanastra &
District Lioness officially
became chartered
through Lions Inter-
national, it has, been a
very active club and has
accomplished a ' great
deal through various
activities such as
catering to weddings and
• banquets, rummage
sales, raffles, bake sales;
• teen dances, running food
booths at ball tour-
naments, booth at the
Lions Fair and sale of
drafts. The members
have raised enough
money to donate $1,000 to
the expansion of the
Vanastra Recreation
Centre and to donate two
trophies each year to the-
Vanastra Public School
for the two most out-
standing grade six
students.
Other--proj eets -include
the donation of $200 to the
Vanastra Public School
for ukuleles, the planting
of flowers and bulbs. at
the Tuckersmith
Township Office; the
sponsoring of one of our
local ball teams by
supplying T-shirts; a
donation to the Christmas
party for the elderly at
the Huron Day Care
Centre ; the supplying of
clothes and toys to new
Vietnamese families; the
distribution of candy and
Christmas stockings to
the residents of Heather
Gardens and donationsto
the Vanastra Co -Op
Nursery and Vanastra
Day Care Centres.
The members also
the nei
support and benefit our
own and other com-
munities. Just like the
Lions Club, the Lioness
Clubs main emphasis is
on helping individuals
and groups in our own
area but the work of the
Club also goes to support
„far reaching
organizations helping the
deaf, blind, handicapped
and the young people
from other countries.
Recently, two Lioness
members along with their
bourhood for
organizations such as the
Heart Foundations when
needed and just recently
have taken on the
sponsorship of the
Guides, Brownies and
pathfinders.
As you can see, it has
been a very active year
for this relatively new
club and hopefully it will
be as active in the future
in order to continue to

Club also presented a gift
to the Gates.
Rob and their sons Alan

left for Ottawa, and Ruth
will follow in a few days.
We wish them success
and happiness in their
new home.
The Gates were
members of this com-
munity for eight years.
Rob has accepted A
teaching position with the
Government in Ottawa. I

3rd, the Vanastra and
District Lions Club held
their first dinner meeting
.of the 1980-81 Lions year.
A special guest, Lion
Paul Rivers from the
Goderich Lions Club, was
on hand. Lion Paul is a
lawyer from Goderich
and he talked to the club
on •the pros and cons of
incorporation of our club.
Our new executive
along with the guidance
of Lion President Tony
Jeacock and the par-
ticipation of club
members, are looking
forward to working

Tuckersmith Township council held
a two hour meeting last week so
that representatives of council could
attend a Stanley Township council
meeting at Varna to appeal the
Vanastra drain report which was to
be discussed. It is a Stanley drain
affecting several landowners in
Tuckersmith.
Because the number of deer -ear
collisions in 1980. has reached record
numbers in Huron County, a' con-
trolled deer hunt will be held
November 3, 4, and 5 in three"`
management zones 89, 90 and 91,
managed by the Ministry of natural
resources.
Other reasons given for the hunt is
because poachers are taking deer
while legitimate hunters are denied
that opportunity; archers are taking •
few deer; deer hunters can provide'
biologists with valuable information
which is otherwise impossible to
collect (all dead deer -are to' be taken
to any one of four stations in Huron for •
collection of information) ; deer
appear to be increasing in Huron; and
the controlled hunter numbers system
including landowner preference, is
compatible with agricultural prac-
tices and rural development.
Licences will be restricted to 625,
and information available from the
ministry of natural resources at
Wingham.
Council passed again a motion
supporting the establishment of a day
care centre for handicapped children,
such as the mentally retarded, at the
Vanastra day care centre. The repeat
of the motion was necessary because
of the resignation of a former official
who was handling the application.
Sam Russo, Jr., who was given
permission ' at the last meeting to
erect a horse stall at 'his place of
business at Vanastra for the con-
venience of his customers, was
refused permission to stable a horse
there.
Road , superintendent Allan
Nicholson reported work has begun on
the new bridge (called Bell's Bridge)
on Concession 12-13 at Lot 6. He said
Union Gas has started the new gas
line from Seaforth ter" Hensall along -
township road 5 and 6, Huron Road
Survey. The line which will stretch
-along a 10 -mile: route will be bored
under crossroads and trees when
encountered.
'Applications for three tile drain
loans were approved for a total of
$16,400.
Accounts totalling $82,878.87 were
passed for payment, including
Vanastra da_y care, $5,017.38;
Vanastra recreation centre, $8,566.42;
roads, $45,155.31 and administration,
$24,139.76. •
Mrs. Linda Dillon of RR 1, Clinton, .
was hired for the position of part-time
secretary for the township office at a
special meeting of council on August •
21. She was one of four applicants for
the position.
