SHARON DIE'1'Z
'Reeve Allan Campbell
of McKillop Township
questioned the county's
procedure of informing.
township councils when
applications to clear lan1.
have been received when
Huron County Council
met Sept, 4,
Campbell said he was
travelling along the north
boundary of McKillop
Township last weekend
and noticed more than 25
acres of bush on a
McKillop farm had been
cleared and he knew
nothing about it.
Clerk -Treasurer Bill
Hanly informed Cam-
pbell, McKillop Township
Council had not been told
the land was bein
cleared, because the
county knew " nothing
about it either.
He said the owner had
not applied to the county
to have the land cleared
and the county would. be
laying a charge.
The county's tree by-
law stipulates that . no
living tree under the size
designated in the by-law
shall be cut down unless
approved by a county
council hearing. One-half
acre or less is exempt
frornthe by-law.
Tom Cunningham,
deputy -reeve of Hullett
Township told council the -
county tree com-
missioner had issued a
permit to clear the land
2 /2 years ago. He said
t er was never - any'
a th rity to issue- the
p r it and the validity of
-the permit would have to
be tested in court. Hesaid
the present owner lives in
Perth County, and had
received the permit to
clear the land - from the
previous owner when he -
purchased the farm.
"I'm - opposed to
clearing good bush" said
Cunningham, "But this is
a poplar bush and isn't
profitable for the far-
mer,"
It's difficult to tell a
farmer with the price of
land today, that such a
bush which isn't good
hard or soft wood and
won't make him some
money in the future -
should not be cut down,
reasoned Cunningham.
Hay's deputy -reeve
Lloyd Mousseau said he
is opposed to' cutting
down any kind of tree.
"If we take out all the
trees except the good
maple, and -if-we-keep on - _
we'll have a desert." said
Mousseau.
"It puts me in mind of
the west which cleared all
their land. Now they'll
plant anything, cedar,
poplar, because trees
create environment," he
comm ented.
"We should preserve
all our trees," added
Mousseau.

It's $ fact
Try this trick, it got
Chris Redford's name in
the Guinness record
books. In 1973 Chris, an
Englishman, put 39 coins
on the forearm near his
elbow, flipped his arm
forward and caught all
the coins in the, same
hand. It was the world
record for coin snatching.
