Ontario Baseball Associa,tion (OBA) quarter -finals behind the two hit shut -out pitching of Mark Nicholson and ere now playing Court - Wright in the a11 -Ontario semWii a1, Clinton beat Court- wright in the opening game of that series last Stindajr. . Nicholson easily went - the distance in Clinton's 13.-0 victory over Hagersville last Satur- day, allowing only five Hagersville runners to reach first base, walking two and allowing only two -exits---an-d--one- erre: He- struck out 11 batters and was in complete control of the game. Clinton raced into the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Butch Fleet walked and Greg Burns doubled to score Fleet from first. Rick Welch walked and Paul Bartliff singled to bring Burns home. Then Cal "Zeke" Fremlin, the proud new father, c6llected a single to score Welch and Bartliff. The Colts scored four more runs in the third as Fleet led off with a single "°and Nicholson and Burns, followed ,by Don MacDonald's double to scored twoon a Hager- sville costly error. Fremlin brought Nicholson , and MacDonald home: The Colts never looked back and went on to score three in the sixth inning, one in the seventh and ended with one in the eighth to come away with a 13 to zip victory and moved on to meet Courtwright. Sowerby has, had the misfortune of good pit- ching against the Colts' silent bats in his last two games, but this time his team mates pulled through and helped their pitcher .with. _a. It hit at- tack. The Colts moved ahead in the fourth inning when Fleet singled and Barns followed with a single and both scored as Dave Bartliff sent a triple soaring to left centr field. Despite the good hit, Dave Bartliff was thrown out at the plate', trying to reach it on the home run. The Colts struck two more in the fifth as MacDonald singled, Colquhoun doubled to bring MacDonald home and Sowerbyfollowed by doubling to, score Colquhoun. Two more insurance runs came for the Colts in the ninth inning ids Dave Bartliff doubled to -lead it off and was -moved to third' base by. brdther` Paul Bartliff's hit. He scored when Fremlin singled, Colquhoun walked and then Sowerby helped"his own cause by singling home Fremlin to round out the score and take a one game to nothing lead. The Colts hard hitting attack gained .its strength through the efforts of MacDonald who went four for 5 along with Sowerby, Fleet, Burns and Dave .Bartliff who each had two hits apiece. Singles went to Fremlin and Colquhoun, The Colts: would like to thank, their fans for support given them in their match against ' Hagersville and Court- wright. They will be looking for that same support this Saturday, September 13 when they. meet Courtwright in the second round of the semi- finals in a 3 pm match.. This game could lead the Colts to the OBA crown, however if a third game is necessary, it will also be held in Clinton on Sunday, -starting at 2 pre. Sturgeon photo) Ramblings fromthe local raceways By Lois Gibbings Dave Wall drove Farral Wall, by Reflected Way-Shadyhill Babe by Highland Express, to victory in 2:06.4 for the Wall Tyme Stables of Komoka in the second division of the OSS at Clinton on Sunday. Nelson White took second with White Dove, while Ken Hardy and Level Flight were third, Doug Brown drove Meadowview Conny, by Harlan Dean - Tommy Jane by Tomplins, across the wire first in a 2:09.1 mile in the first division for owner Charles Reid of Orono. Dave Wall finished second with Rena Herbert, while Robin Moore took third driving Spooky River. en's teams tie The best of three semi- finals of the Clinton Men's Industrial League are all tied up between Lobb's Caseys and Merner's Construction, and the third and deciding game will -be Crediton ousted The Clinton pee wee baseball team has earned the right to advance to the next round of the W.O.A.A. playoffs by winning the best of five series with Crediton 3 games to none. Clinton won the first game 25-1 with Randy Keys pitching while, Dan Horton led the batters - hitting 5 for 5 with 2 home runs. Troy Falconer also had a perfect night at the plate, hitting 3 for 3. Crediton's only hit was a double by E. Glanville. Clinton won the second game in Crediton by a 39- 5 score. Dan Horton was the winning pitcher giving up just three hits. Clinton's leading hit- ters were Jerry McMahon 3 for 3, Dan Horton 5 fol. 6, ,-Byron Boyes 3 for 4, 'Troy Falconer 3 for 4, Randy , Keys. 3 for 4, John Scruton— ., 4 for 6 and Mike Powell 3 for 4. Scott Miller had a home run and a single for Crediton. Jeff Turner pitched a steady game to lead Clinton to a 24-9 win .in Clinton on Sept. 3. Scott Miller with 2 for 4, G. Glanville 3 for 4 and S. Lightfoot with 3 for 4 led the Crediton hitters. The Crediton team is a young team and deserves credit for their spirit and good sportsmanship. The winner of the series will meet the Bluebirds in the championship final set to open next Monday, September 15. The Birds got into the finals by getting a bye for finishing in first place in the league standings. In the first game of the semis, Lobb's nipped Merners 6-5 on Sep- tember 1, and Merners came back to win the second game 12-4 on September 8. - Merners made the semi-final by whipping Goderich Township 10-3 and 16-15 in quarter final action, while Lobb's Caseys advanced by virtue of 10-1 and 7-2 wins over Excello, who won theopening game 9-8. The Birds made the final on the strength of their 12-11 and 28-9 vic- tories over the Teachers in the other quarter final series. Each division was .competing for a purse of $5,439. Amys Miss, owned and trained by Rex Duck- worth of Goderich, took a 2:11 pacing record in winning the first race. The five-year-old mare by Ames Hanover -Iona Miss by Timely Topic, has also been second once and third three times from eight starts in 1980. Amy's Miss was driven to her first. lifetime win by Dave Wall. Finishing second was Ames Shadow, a two-year-old colt by Ames Hanover - Dainty Debbie, making his first lifetime start. Randy Henry drove the full brother to the three- year-old ' filly, Ames Pride, a winner in p,2:08.3 at Goderich on August 28. Ted McLean. was third with Deep Run Skipper that he co-owns with his wife Alma. R.W. Scout won the second in p,2:08.4 with John Muir up for Larry Jeffrey of Goderich. This was the fourth win this year for the six, -year-old gelding by Tarpor.t Arnie - Debbie Sue Direct,with a p,2:06.1 record taken earlier this year at Windsor Raceway. Randy Henry led most of the way with Jolly Killean for Lionel Arbour of Goderich before ending up third.
