But this is not the case in Annie Get Your Gun, HuronCountry Playhouse's final offerin. g of the season. ., Annie is a beautiful,. romantic story set in the old days of.the Wild West and boasting such famous Irving Berlin songs as Doin' What • Comes Natur'lly, There's No Business Like Show Business, I Got the Sun in the Morning and AnythingYou Can Do. The polished Playhouse prod ic't`iLli more_ than- does handoes justice to the original play. This is due in large part to the out- standing acting and singing abilities of the lead characters, Karen Wood as Annie Oakley and Robert Hall as Frank Butler. Wood is sure to steal the hearts of all who see her as Annie Oakley and it is certainly easy to understand how she also, steals the heart of the sharp shooting Frank Butler. Wood is exactly as one might picture the 'real' Annie --small but mighty, cute not FESTIVAL SINGLES dance Friday, August 29, Victorian Inn, Stratford. SUNDAY, AUGUST 31 ST 1:30 Tug -O -War Entertainment in front of bleachers Horse Shoe Pitching 3:00 Demolition Derby beautiful, hot tempered yet vulnerable. Here face, with its . large dominant eyes, . Y _., is so expressive xpressrve that she could , .act with it alone. As if all of this is not enough, she can sing too, Nall is dashing as Frank Butler. Ills chartn, -good looks and deep, strong singing voice melt the hearts of not only those females in the play, but those in the audience, as well. Frank isthe star One Buffalo Bill Show with his expert marksmanship until little Annie Oakley shows up 'from the back- woods and outdraws him in . a shooting contest. Annie wears her heart on' her slea,ve for Frank right from - -.the_ _beginning. but she soon learns that 'You Can't Get A Man With A Gun', Annie joins The Buffalo Bill Show as -Frank's assistant but she is such a novelty that she soon becomes the main at- traction. This drives Frank to join Buffalo Bill's competition, The Pawnee Bill Show, even though he has fallen in love with Annie by this time. Of course, like all old fashioned romances, the ending is a happy one. Wood and Hall are backed up by a talented supporting cast, - in- cluding . Goderich's own Debbi. dd ,ck who. Debbie . Sha plays the role of Minnie,. Annie'syounger sister. Tom O'Neill is ex- cellent as Charlie Davenport, thesmooth talking manager of The Buffalo Bill Show. Be. plays his lines in Groucho Marx style and is- a real joy to watch. As the tacky Dolly Tate, Nancy. Kerr also gives an excellent per- formance. She sports a strong singing voice too, Dolly's giggling daughter • Winnie "is , played . by Barbara ' Saxberg Land and Tommy, the young man she keeps hoping to run off with, is playd by Rpd Menzies. These two _ really have the audience rooting for them and their musical number, Who Do You Love I Hope, is performed well. Annie's little brother, Little Jake, is played by Darryl Greenwood with the natural spontaneity of a child. At one point, Darryl has trouble keeping his costume on so he just grabs hold of the top of his pants and hoists them up a couple of in- ches. This unconscious act is so typical of a little boy that it fits right into the play even'though it is unplanned. Don McManus, in his role as Buffalo Bill, looks like a younger version of Col. nel Sanders. He is a slick -showman -but - basically -nice -guy all milled -into oiie: • • • - Chief Sitting Bull, as YOU ARE INVITED to attend the Huron - Middlesex Liberal Association's corn and beef night on Thursday, September 18, 1980 at Pine Ridge Chalet, Hensall. Bring the family for beef -on -a -bun and lots of corn -on -the -cob from 6- 8:30 p.m: and visit with Jack Riddell, MPP. Dancing to ',Spirit will follow. There will' be no charge for food or dan- cing and everyone is welcome. -36 the not -so -dumb Indian who ,becomes Annie's father, figure, is given an' excellent portrayal by Jack Van vera. Space does not permit the the mention' of all those important people who . form: the orchestra and the chorus, including a talented barbershop style s):uartet. But they really deserve ,a hand for a job well done. Costumes by Elizabeth LelVioine are great -- bright Eind colorful, The sets by Glenn R. DeVino work well also, Choreograhy by Robert Landar (also the director) with assistance by Barbara Saxberg Land is . excellent, especially the tribal Indian dance. Robert Landar is assisted by James Saar in his direction of Annie and the whole show is a credit to that direction. If you want to hear some toe -tapping familiar music and watch an old fashioned romance that leaves you feeling good when the curtain falls, don't miss Annie Get Your Gun which is playing until September 6.
