Gordon Dobie was honored at a retirement party last Saturday evening when his family entertained relatives, neighbours and friends and co-workers in the Huron County Road workers. at his home. Cards were enjoyed and relatives and friends were present from Waterloo, Listowel, Goderich, Wingham and the surrounding district. A family dinner had been held recently at the home of his son, Mr. and Mrs. mope Chapetservice The annual Hope Chapel memorial service was held last Sunday with Richard Hawley as the speaker. A fair crowd attended and the grounds were lovely with bouquets of summer flowers to mark the graves of loved ones. Mr. Hawley chose for his inspiring message, Endings and Beginnings. He likened the human life to this subject stating that changes happen - some thing dies, something is born. "Wehave to accept change,' he said, "let ga and goon living". Bill Dobie and family of Goderich, Mrs. Vera Doerr of Niagara Falls visited last week with her brother, Gordon Chamney and Mrs. Chamney. Mrs. Norman McDowell is improving in -health -in University )Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Grasby, Prince Albert, Sask., visited relatives in the Kippen area. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gackstetter, Guelph, were recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jones. Archie Parsons is confined to hospital in London. Mr, and Mrs. Joe McQuarrie, David and Dianne have returned from a visit in i .c. . Steven and Amey Cooper of London .are spending the week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vivan Cooper. Tom Munroe and Ian Munroe, who have spent the past three weeks in Muskoka, have returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Alderdice and Pam of Saudi Arabia, Mr. and Mrs. Garry Alderdice and family, Nova Scotia are visiting relatives in the area. Mrs. Mae Bulak, Toronto, the former Mae McGregor, called on friends and relatives in the area last week. Kippen Gun Club met August 12. with • 27 shooters present. Top shooters included John Anderson, . The meditation taken by Mrs. Sanderson was the Ministry of Kindness. Mr, and Mrs. Wilbert Thom Thoms remember 50 years Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Thom, RR3 Auburn were honored last Sunday at the Carlow Township Hall when members of their family held Open House -for relatives, neighbours and friends on the oc- casion of their golden wedding. Grandsons Randy and Jeffrey Thom were . in charge of the guest book and members of their family welcomed everyone. ' Seated with the honored guests were their attendants of 50 years ago, ._. Dawson- Craig of Whitechurch, cousin of Mr. Thom, and Mrs. Thom's sister, Mrs. Jaek (Minnie) Farrish of Listowel. A three -tiered decorated wedding cake adorned the table along with many gifts and cards to mark the oc- casion. ccasion. 'The bride , was the former Hazel Good, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Good of Colborne Township and the groom is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Thom also of _Colborne Township, _.. __-- Following their marriage they resided on the groom's farm in Colborne Township until.. 15 years ago when they moved to their farm west of Auburn. Both are members of Knox Presbyterian Church, Goderich and for many years, Mrs. Thom has belonged to the Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute. They had a family of five -Mrs. Arnold (Audrey) ` Rivett of Dungannon; Mrs. Helen Anderson of Calgary; Jack ,of'-' Colborne Township';' of of Goderich Township and James 'who passed away six years ago. There are 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.. Mrs. Thom has four sisters, Mrs. Gladstone (Mary) Grigg of Clinton; Mrs. Jack (Minnie) Farrish, Listowel; Mrs. Bill (Myrtle) ' Stirling, Goderich; Mrs. Duncan (Jean) Murchison, Mississauga; and two brothers, Harold of Goderich and Mel of Colborne Township. Mr. Thom has one sister, Mrs. Fern Rintoul. of Wingharn. A sister, Janet and a brother Charlespassed away several years ago. Following the. Open House a family dinner was held at the Bedford- Hotel, Goderich and a social time held at their home later The celebrants received a letter of congratulations from the Governor General of Canada, E'd'ward Schreyer with notificatior,>Iri that a plaque will follow. They received - a congratulatory telegram from Joe Clark, leader of the Opposition and the Progressive C.on- servative Party in Canada.
