by
Carolanne Doig
Last week, a ViSit to
Glen Abbey in Oakville
• convinced me that. any
Canadian golf fan should
visit the courseand. play
a round,sbefore they go to,
that great golf course in
the sky. Regardless 9f
your skill at the game,
you will enjoy a, day
where golf is the focal
point of all happenings.
The site where Jack
Nicklaus designed the
course that was to
become the home of the
Canadian Open, was
originally the private
estate of Andre Dorfman,
a mining engineer. The
land was situated in a
-v ail
quiet river flowed along
rugged embankments
covered with trees.
Dorfman had polo fields
and lush gardens in-
cluded in his landscaping
of the estate. A large
mansion was built in the
late 1930's with huge
rooms to accommodate
the many affluent guests.
In the early 50's, the
estate was turned over to
Jesuits of the Toronto and
Hamilton Diocese, and
came to. be known as the
Abbey. The Jesuits later
moved closer to the city
and by 1958 a golf course
was being built on the
site. Finally after various
a
owners the Abbey Glen
Property Corp. took over
the estate and golf
course.
In Qctober of 1975 the
Royal Canadian Goif
Association moved into
the Abbey where they had
suitable space for their
needs and an excellent
course nearby: The
Abbey has since been
named Golf House and
contains a golf museum,
library and the Canadian
Golf Hall of Fame. The
golf course and Golf
House were officially
opened in June 1976 when
Jack Nicklaus the course
designer, and Torn
Weiskopf played an
exhibition match. Glen
n -chosen as
the permanent site of the
Canadian Open with the
1980 Open at Montreal
being the last of the
roving opens.
Seaforth and area
residents will find, the
course easy to get to by
folowing .the 401
Trafalgar Road and
taking Trafalgar Road°
into the Q.E.W. Just past
the Country Spire
Restaurant you take a
quiet paved service road
to tile unobtrusive Glen
Abbey gates.

the course and a spacious
parking lot adjacent to
the pro Shop and nearby

staff will be happy to help
you choose among the
many Glen Abbey

Abbey course. We
arrived in plenty of time
to browse in the pro shop
and then a short walk to
the Golf House.

to the public Monday to
Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30
p.m!.,as well as the entire

relaxation. Slide shows,
audio-visual presen-
tations and informal
discussions are available
to member clubs either at
Golf House or at your own
club,
Between our visit to
Golf snd niir tpe,
off time, we wandered to
- the Clubhouse, for lunch,
The dining room - lounge
offers you a lovely view Of
the course through
smoked glass windows.

visitors. The main floor
contains R.C.G.A. ad-
ministrative offices and a
museum. The museum
contains an interesting
collection of old clubs,
bags, balls, and tees.

a club made from a
whale's tooth to the
putters declared illegal in
