For the first time in decades, Clinton has less
houses this year than the town did last. Five houses
have been torn down and not one new one built. The
lastest victim was a house on Ontario Stf et owned.
by the Clinton Credit Union which has fallen to the
wrecker's hammer. (James Fitzgerald photo)
Enjoy salads and quiche at Blyth
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Food and en-
tertainrnent often go
hand in hand --one can
enhance the other.
Keeping this in mind, the
Blyth Summer Festival. ,
has added a new
dimension to its program
this year with The Food
Spot located in the
basement of Blyth
Memorial Hall.
Managed by Gerry
Cumming, . a young
woman from Lucknow,
The Food Spot offers an
innovative menu
designed for those
theatre -goers who want a
light meal before at-
tending the play .of their
`choice.
Mrs. Cumming began
looking after the . con-
cessions at the Blyth
Summer Festival .in 1979
when only light refresh-
ments were served. She
had had . previous ex-
perience working. in a

university cafeteria, a
bake shop and numerous
restaurants, both as a
chef and as a waitress.
When The Food Spot
first opened this summer
in its expanded form,
business was slow
because people didn't
realize it existed, says
Mrs. Cumming. But since
then, there have been a
lot of positive comments
and business is picking
up, she says. Onan
average night, between
20 and 30 theatre -goers
eat their meals at The
Food Spot.
Mrs. Cumming does all
her food preparation in
the Blyth hall kitchen.
Since The Food ,Spot
opens at 6 p.m.. every
performance night, she
starts "working about 4
p.m. She finds the micro
wave oven a valuable aid.
On Thursdays, there are 2
o'clock matinees at the
Blyth Festival so Mrs..
Cumming opens The
Food Spot at noon.
During intermissions,
beverages and snacks
continue to be available.
Food offered includes a
choice of soup each day
along with Greek, theatre
or tossed salads, fresh
vegetable or cheese
platters, a choice of crab
quiche or meat and
potato quiche and a
selection of sandwiches
served on bagels and
buns. This menu is
complemented each day
with specials, and local
produce in season,
pastries from the
Lucknow bakery and of
course, coffee, tea, cider,
lemonade. and .ice "cream.
The food is served on
paper plates which
makes cleaning up easier
for Mrs. Cumming.
Basically she is a one
woman operation but she
receives assistance from
other workers and

when they have time.
When Mrs. Cumming is
not working at The Food
Spot, she keeps busy
looking after her garden
and her three daughters.
She really enjoys her
job and the people at the
Festival. At night, after
everyone has been fed
and a play has begun
upstairs, Mrs. Cumming
diligently cleans up her
kitchen in_: the basement
and listens to the sounds'
of the play and the
audience reaction above
her.
"You should hear'the
screams down here when
Midnight is on," she says
referring to Peter
Colley's comedy thriller,
`I'll Be Back For You
Before Midnight.'
Mrs. Cumming feels
pleased that she can offer
one more convenient
service to the patrons of
Blyth theatre. At The
Food Spot they can eat
their meals only seconds
away from the play they
wish to see; prices are.
kept as low as possible
and no reservations .are
necessary.
