Windebank have been offending several weeks holidays at their Bayfield Retreat, before returning home to London. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Sturgeon and sons Jeff and Roland, Orangeville, have returned home after Spending several 'weeks at their Bayfield cottage. Well, 'Fifty the Beagle' was back-iirthwdughouse- on Sunday, after paying a short visit in the 'Mole House' where he promptly jumped on the dining room table and consumed Mrs. Mole's 'ham sandwich' which had been sitting thereupon. Too bad! Bill and Ruth Latimer and baby Amanda have returned home to Weston after spending holidays in Bayfield with Mrs. Ethel Knight. Matt" and Barb Smith and family, of London, formerly of Bayfield, are now back in the village, holidaying at the cottage they purchased on GIass Street. Mr. Bob Mitchell is -t home again in the village, enjoying a sojourn from work on the steamboat on _whlieh.__-,he ; is presently employed" Mr. Fred Fansher, Windsor, was round and about the village during the weekend. M'r. Brian Makins, Toronto, was again the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Makins, for the weekend, at their Main Street residence. Guests with Gary and dna Hulley at the 'Sandcastle' and 'Toadstool' on Howard Street, - included Carol and Dave Pelton of Paris. A letter left in my Lampoon Mailbox from a five-year-old girl this week read to the effect that her mother wouldn't let her go to the park --(-Cl a n Qr- gor__._—$.qua anymore, because, "Dogs go to the bathroom in the park and dogs get into the garbage." "Well little girl, I don't know what I can do about that, maybe I'll check with 'Fifty' later and we'll come up with a solution. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Mr.Douglas Gemeinhardt who is currently a patient in London Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Don Lance, of Bayfield's Main Street, had Mr. J. Alford Jones (a clock collector friend of Mr. Lance) as a weekend guest. Mrs. Lance also tells us that while strollingout on the pier the other night, a smallish, middle-aged man approached them and queried, "Can you tell me what lake this is?" Unable to suppress a quick guffaw, Don replied, "Lake Huron", as soon as he was able', The man then got back into his car and 'drove. away, leaving the Lances 7_ to Wonder if he didn't know where he was, "how did he get to Bayfield?" Miss Mae Ervine, who was the guest of her nephew Bill Lowry and his . wife Margaret for several days, has returned to her home in Goderich. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Diemert, daughter Karen and her friend Noelle rte-- Tilton of St. r. . were weekend guests of his family, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Diemert, Wayne and Rick and their son Brian: The girls remained for a week's visit. with Karen's Uncle Wayne. Best wishes are ex- tended .to Fred Telford, who is confined in University Hospital, London, following surgery last Thursday. Kenneth Sturgeon, Cambridge was an overnight guest Friday with the Walt Erickson family. It .seemed like guests from all over the world visited Bayfield last week as guests registered at the Albion Hotel from. New Zealand, England, Tokyo, Japan as well as Man y.point.s .in_ lie.0 S,.A., .. and Canada. While speaking with the couple from Japan, the lady was asked how they • found . Bayfield. She replied that they had been -'to Niagara 1\Is, had motored to visa a girlfriend in Detroit, Michigan and had looked at the map for a small place to spend a day or so and her eyes fell on's Bayfield. She said they felt 'so fortunate to have found such a beautiful spot, lovely hotel and nice friendly people. She said they would take home wit'h them. many lovely impressions of our beautiful village. Evelyn Sturgeon, Luanne and Lydia Erickson, Donelda Sturgeon and Jayne and Milvena Erickson at- tended a bridal shower Wednesday evening at , the home of Janet Stewart, near Ripley to honour Ann Pilcher who is to be married to Mark Stewart on Sat, Aug. 30. Mark is a nephew of Milvena and youngest son of Norma (Sturgeon) Stewart. . Glen Sturgeon ., visited with his brother-in-law, Gordon Stewart of R123 Ripley on Wednesday evening while his wife and daughter attended a bridal shower for his niece -to -be. So it seems, -two locals took it upon themselves to brew up a batch of elderberry wine one year around fair time. To keep the story credible, we must point out that in those days, the Bayfield, Fair was held later in the fall, hence the berries were past season and ample time was available for the fermentation to take effect. From their lakebank residence it was toted to ,t-11,6 Agricultural Park in 'honey pails' where it was passed through a hole in the hoard fence to the thirsty recipients Drinking elderberry wine from a wide mouthed honey pail is by no means a delicate task', thereby - explaining the blue moustaches and the two blue streaks down the fronts of the shirts of many 'fair dignitaries' and other sippers. . However, that was an old time fair. But if you see the tell-tale signs again, you'll know what hap- pened. +++° Next week we're either going golfing or down to 'Jack the Hugger's Lane', or maybe both. Mrs. Robert Meyers and daughters, Michelle and Marsha visited the beginning' of the week with her mother, Mrs. Lena Er vine. Lori and Bob Gould and family have returned home to Regina, Saskatchewan after spending two weeks with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bev McClin- c ey. Joshua, ,Jacob and Cheryl Gould were baptised in St. Andrew's United Church on August 3. Following the service, a family picnic was held with Bob's sister Sue and Bob Webb of Calgary and brother Jim and Wendy Gould of Kitchener as well as Nancy Graham and Randy McClinchey, godparents. In the Tuesday night opener for the Bayfield p'lyers, it was close, but they dropped a 7-6 decision to the Zurich • Eagles in Zurich. Thursday night i- Bayfield, the Eagles again dumped them,. this time by an 11-5 count to win the best -of -three series, two games to nil. • Wednesday night in Bayfield the regular season champion Knighthawks met defeat at the hands of the Dash- wood squad, losing 13-12 after a lengthy discussion between umpires, scorekeepers to deter- mine the actual score of the game. Switching to the Bluewater Ladies Slo- pitch League action, the regular season ended last Monday evening with the Varna Agricos ousting the 13ayfield Blue Shadows 1.5-4 to win the league championship. The playoff schedule sees Varna at the Babes, ,and the Stars at the. Goodtimes in best -of -five semi-finals. Men's Slo-pitch action continued on Sunday evening in Dashwood, as Many Bayfield fans made the trip to the game and watched the Knighthawks clip Dash- wood 7-5 ,toeven their bes-of-three series at one game .eaeh.. Deciding game is to be played in Bayfield on Wednesday night. The Ladies. Monday night games in Varna and Bayfield were both rained out, with the ac- tion slated to go later in the week now. In tournament play this past° weekend, the Bayfield Flyers travelled to Dorchester where they lost to Anderton Tavern of Windsor 12 to 0. and to • 2to9 thereby being eliminated. Tim West_ of the Bayfield Knighthawks was in Paris, Ontario on Saturday where he played for Woodstock Bell in the annual Hell Telephone slo-pitch tournament. The Woodstock team defeated Sincoe, but lost . to Stratford. Some of our Bayfield teams will be competing in the Slo*Pitch Tourney agles ♦ Y at the 1Groderich Sport- sf est this weekend. Please check with team, members for game titnes if you wish to attend, tudy plant identification By means of slides 'and living examples of plants and flowers, members learned how to classify a plant into its correct family when Mrs. Florence Pullen of Clinton 'addressed the Bayfield Garden Club Monday evening. Mrs. Pullen explained that a weed is a plant out of place, and a noxious weed is a plant which can cause harm to persons • a • weed . ois.on into this-' country, as recently happened in this area` when grass seed purchased from another country was planted and when it grew also grew weeds native to the country of origin. Mrs., Pullen was introduced by Mrs. Lois Lance and thanked by Dr. S. Sunday night in Pioneer Park in Bayfield _was (Bud Sturgeon photo) excellent and the actors had perfect working Youth play captures audience The Lambton Youth Theatre returned to Pioneer Park in Bayfield last Saturday evening and presented their version of "The Mum- berly Inheritance" (or His Substance Frittered). The crowd of over 75 persons became totally enthralled in the am- bitious production. Dialogue from the villainous 'Mayhem Marmaduke' erupted the 'crowd with 'boos and jeers', with spontaneous cheers end applause being s avedfar rl e goQfJ- guys 1"ike Rodney Stoutheart. The well -acted and e.sy to follow plate as broadcast well by the actors; ^'making it delight` for everyone attendance. The weather w almost perfect, with breeze blowing in off t lake on the audien seated on lawn chairs a laying on blankets on t ground in front of the se As the evening wore on, more curious onlooke happened by, and on caught up in the play, couldn't leave witho hearing the ending, 'a twist' to e familiar story line. However, riotous ap- plause and laughter abounded as the play ended with a chase scene throughout the audience with the 'good -guys' getting their man. Everybody had a smile on: their face. It was top-notch en- tertainment, and not enough can be said about this theatrical group for bringing these plays to places like Bayfield. The people that opted to stay home and watch TV on Saturday made the tell-tale wrong choice. also presented Brian Way's, "On. Trial", family fare, which' also provided superb en- tertainment for old and young alike. the ' congregation of Trinity Church ° joined their sister parishioners of St. James, Middleton Sunday morning for the 9th annual Galilean Service in the Stewart Middleton Park. A hymn sing was en- joyed before the start of the service led by members of Huron Church Camp ac- companying on their guitars.
