In the Netherlands governmental rules -and laws have been fashioned for the 'protection of three 'labour organizations: the --4,-----c'affita c, the Protestant and, so called," "neutral" or "non -religious" labour organizations. For the purpose of illustration, I would in- form you that the Netherlands established these governmental* as early as 1920 in order to protect the rights' and privileges, of a full- fledged ' nation-wide educational system without prejudice, regardless of religious direction'or affiliation. Similarly, in labour relations, privileges and rights of the workers are there established and protected by law, 40 providing equal op- portunity in job -sharing and workers' benefits for both organized and unorganized labour in both industrial projects and public services, regardless of whether they are employed by contractors or sub- contractors. Moreover, the government provides for annual and semi-annual conferences with representatives of the respective labour organizations to register rEEw,n +„ rt..7 Ercedoni. s dena:ed ,OPEN LETTER TOMPP JACK RIDDELL Dear Sir: The Labour Relations Act, Section 3, guaran- tees fr.eed, oni of association. Workers are free to elect by majority the trade union of their choice. Why is it then that many ' construction workers are prohibited from working on certain jobs. es . because they 'chose an independent, Canadian union -such as the Christian Labour Association 'of Canada and work under one of its collective agreements? The international construction unions with head ---off ic- es---in----th-e- U S- have for years harrassed CLAC member con- struction . workers and their employers. CLAC - organized firms cannot bid on many construction projects (including pubic works projects) because the work is being reserved for AFL-CIO in- ternational unions via subcontracting clauses. Now these same unions want the right to order', their members off any jobside when any crew works there that does ndt . belong to one of their unions, by pushing for so- ca'lled non -affiliation • clauses. If they are successful this will ' ef- fectively eliminate in- dependent union mem- 4 1,, baer s, as well as non-union jobs#es: _ As a member of your riding, I ask you, is it fair and just,: -that the in- ternational construction unions be allowed to ot'ganize construction workers "from the top down," gain a virtual monopoly ' over all con- struction'' work in this province, and dictate to all of the province who works when, where, and at what rates?' I protest such discriminatory practices, since it destroys the legal right of workers to decide by majority vote (a vote. conducted by the Labour Relations Board) to be represented by a legally - recognized trade union of their own free choice. Will you .please bring these discriminatory practices to the attention of the Minister of Labour and insist that. our basic rights and freedoms are protected? ..
