SEAFORTH - In 1979,
the city of Stratford hada
total of 440 recorded
violations under the
liquor Licence act. In
Seaforth, a town one-
tenth the size, violations
that same year totalled
107, approximately one-
quarter of those of
Stratford.
Those figures • in
Stratford are ex-
ceptionally high and
comparable to a city
twice its size, like
Kingston, Belleville and
Peterborough.
According to Stratford
Deputy Chief Doug
Hartung, "Either we
have striet officers or an
extremely serious
problem."
Under the liquor
licence act, the Waterloo
region acknowledges one
arrest per 150 residents.
In the approximate 10,1100
yearly population
Covered y the Godeni

charges laid per one
hundred residents.
Although the fine for a
violation of the liquor act
rose to $63 as of August
provincial court judge
William G. Cochrane, of
Goderich, said he did not
think that the increased
fine would be a
significant deterrent.
