And it isn't sliding down the, hill Though grumblers say it, surely will. Unrivalled spot tomuse and think, And make demands on printer's ink, Concocting simple easy ryhmes Descriptive of the olden times. Many, many years have slipped away Since the first villager came to stay Then the village it gradually grew As the stage went daily through, Discharging passengers and freight Flourishing stores kept open late; Two big hotels; aglow with light, Were vocal far into the night, With song lee-and-r-.ustic-dance- Toned with a "Scrap or two perchance, A jolly frollic place you bet, For then., the village, it was "wet". The boozers rallied round the can At night to the hotels they ran; Spending all their hard earned cash And always doing something rash. Yes, Dungannon in days of yore Heard many a drunkard's roar But for all that the village boomed While whiskey was being consumed. Oh, Dungannon her sons were grand; Her daughters best in all the land! For you know Dungannon's lovely girls - Were then, as now, admired like pearls. The busy ones worked with all their might, , While the boozer boozed both day and night, Dungannon was a wild place then And contained some very wild men. Ys Those days are gone. Those scenes have fled; No Dungannonite is seen with his nose all red. The beer keg has gone - faded"'aivay; Quite a contrast to the early day. The beer wagon now avoids the place,' Seldom the drunkard shows his face. They all now , give it the "go-by"; For Dungannon-,- once so "wet" -is '-'dry"-. But Local Option didn't make things slow; Business is brisk and all's well you know. A place, of placid..sweet repose, What a treat 'twould be for those Unnerved by the hustling city din, Or wrecked on .bestial seas of sin! The worried, fretted, restless man, Dwindling existence to a span, All whirling, furious and fast Like leaves in a November blast;.. Come one, come •all, and live with us, Away from all the din and fuss And rest, and sleep, and happy be In a place where you cannot spree! For be it clearly understood Dungannon at last is good.
