Institutedoes history book The Dungannon Women's Institute has prepared a history book to be published 4n con- junction with the Dungannon 125th bir- thday party. Marian Zinn, Olive Blake, Elora Black and Elsie Irvin are members of the institute wha:havworked.. on:. the project and the fifth member of their com- mittee has been Ashfield resident, Sheila Gunby. The history book traces the family history of the farms in the southern part of Ashfield and West Wawanosh, and the Port Albert area. In the village of Dungannon, histories were done for the school, churches, businesses and stores. The book also includes township minutes. and reports of road , building; honour rolls of the two world wars; „golden and diamond anniversaries; methods of farming and pictures from the in- stitute Tweedsmuir History book. The committee used the census of 1851, 1861 and 1871 to trace family origins as well as resources at the registry office. Family histories were done in the village ecause many. -of the-- it age families were retired couples who had moved into the village from the outlying farms and their histories would have been repetitious. The greatest find of the research done for the book was a diary written by William McQuoid of concession 7 in Ashfield. Excerpts from the diary published in the history book cover a period of 40 years. Mr. McQuoid wrote in his diary every day from about 1860 until two days before his death in 1913. The diary is contained in a series of 12 books. The 'committee spent hours talking with older members' ofthe com- munity whose memories of the past provided. valuable resources for the history. Their research, produced stories which have to remain .unwritten to protect the families, but the committee laughs about the other history that still remains to be written, the one you can't write. They found the response to their request for information to be overwhelming. People would come with armfuls of pictures and scrap- books willing to talk - about their family's ancestorsfor hours.. -The committee has attempted to verify all the in- formation in the book but they realize there may be mistakes. They ask that if there are mistakes or. omissions, people inform them so they car,a be corrected should another. edition of the book be printed. The history ...book has also put the committee in touch with people trying to trace their family's roots. A granddaughter and great-granddaughter of the Hagens who lived in Dungannon about 1874 were looking for in- formation about their family at the Goderich library. Olive Blake's cousin who worked at the library sent them to Olive and she went. to. Willy John, Stuthers. He sent them tothe cemetery, where they found in- formation on the tomb- stones . which . verified Happy Birthday Du atunon From Sepoy Stationry & Printing Lucknow Phone 528.2919 information they already had, connecting them to their ancestors. The committee found the. medical histories of the families most in- teresting. There were frequent deaths{caused by blood poisoning and one account of a young man, . whocontacted. rabies. The death was so terrible, the family smothered him with a mattress to end his misery. He left a wife and two small childr" en.
