In 1843 William Mallough and his 'bride,
Jane Menary, arrived in , Huron County,
Ashfield Township from Dungannon, Ire+
land, where they took up land and built a
small home in the bush.
The trail in front of this land Was the
dividing land between Ashfield and West
Wawanosh.
In 1844 Robert Davidson and his bride,
Martha Menary carne from Dungannon,
• Ireland, and took up land in Ashfield next to
William and Jane Mallough. Martha and
Jane were sisters.
A short time later William McMath
arrived and took up land and built a small
house in West Wawanosh across the road
from William Mallough.
Soon a fourth man by the name of Berry
arrived and took up land next to McMath,
this making the four corners of the village
now known as Dungannon, bel g ,named by
the first settlers after their home town in
Ireland.
In 1854,. Williarn Mallough started a hotel
whic h afterwards his son, Jon, took over.
William's father, Ben Mallough, came
over from Ireland in 1849 and was killed by y a
falling tree on the fourth concession of the
township of Ashfield in Huron near where
Frank Glenn's house now stands.
The first storekeeper iq the village was
Robert Clendenning.
