Be Back For You Before
Midnight opens there on
July 29. "Midnight" was
the favourite of :,critics
and audiences alike in the
1979 season, and played to
sold out houses during its
limited run last year.
However, those who
missed getting tickets
will have a second chance
to see this thriller that
mixes a good dose of
humour with the
suspense.
Since its premiere at
B1yihin 199; 1'll Be --Back
For You Before Midnight
has enjoyed great suc-
cess. A' total of four
theatres have included
`Midnight' in 'their
smerufn er - seasons, and
negotiations are un-
derway for a Broadway
production. Playwright
Peter Colley has written
several versions of the
play; consequently,
audiences at different
theatres "this summer
may experience different
solutions to the mystery.
Blyth audiences may be
assured that, regardless
of "whodunnit", the
unwinding of -the plot will
be as full oflaughs and
screams asin .1979.
The 1980 production is
directed by Miles Potter,
whose directing credits
include the direction of
St. Sam of the Nuke Pile
earlier in the Blyth
season. Totally new sets
and costumes have been
designed by Pae -'Flood,
who also designed St.
Sam of the Nuke Pile and
John and the Missus.
The cast includes
Diana Belshaw as Jan,
the nervous young
woman recovering from
a- mental breakdown.
Greg, her husband, is
played by Tom Arnott.
Laura, the beautiful but
sinister sister, is played_
by Anne Anglin. Hardee
T. Lineham completes
the cast as George, the
neighbourly farmer.

Fox then went to visit
Mr. McLaren and says,
"I was knocked over by
the guy. He's charming.
He's got class ! "
Prior to rehearsals for
Blyth's first production
this seson, a two week
workshop was held so
that ideas for a play
about Jack McLaren
could be .thrown around.
Janet Amos then went
over these ideas and
roughed out a scenario.
All: of the resulted in 4
play not only about Jack
but about the vital era in
which he lived.. Fox says
it is going' to be difficult to
contain allot the material
in the tete span . of -one
play but he is looking
forward' to. using the
vaudevillian form which;
has been adopted for the
pley because "it lets you
go overboard".
He explains that the
goal is to provide `lively
and energetic 'en-
tertainment so people cats
have fun and see Jack
and..histimes:"
There will be lots of
one-liners, satire and
songs," Some of the
original Music of the
Dumbells is being used
and the rest has been
composed and arranged
by John Roby whom Fox
classifies—as—an---
cellent musician".
Fox describes the
character of . .,Tack as
"weaving in and out of
the play" and says there
will be plenty of other ,
characters involved, Two
of these will be Andrew
Hamilton Galt and Sir
Frederick Ranting,
friends of Mr. MVlcLaren.
Galt; a major in the ar-
my, put up the money to
start the Princess Pat •
Comedy Company, the'.
predecessor of the
Dumbells (they merged
in 1918) . Banting, the
discoverer of insulin, was
a shy man and a p.ainter
like McLaren.
' Fox says Mr. McLaren
is very good /at writing
monologues.
Mr. McLaren came to
our ' area via Hurricane
Hazel'. During_ that
Hurricane, his home in
Toronto was flooded. He
had an acquaintance in
Bayfield and so he used
that village as his base
while he drove around the
area looking for new
place to live,, eventually
settling on Benmiller.
Besides David Fox,the
cast for The .Life That
Jack Built, will include
Seana McKenna, William
Dunlop, Michel Lefebvre,
Thomas Hauff . and John
Jarvis. Linda Muir will
execute the design.
The play will open on
August 5 and tickets are
now on sale at the box
office.
