Turtles are interesting creatues, having been
around for about 200 million years -and -they have
changed very little in the last 150 million years.
They range in size from about a pound to over a
ton, and are found in almost all regions except
the polar areas. Of the approximately 250 sPecies
of turtles in the world today,. Ontario is hast to
eight -different varieties
The Midland Painted Turtle is the most com-
mon and well-known turtle in Ontario.and gets its
name from its attractive and colourful
markings. The average , painted turtle has a •
car -apace (shell) length of 6 ;:or, 7 inches and is
found throughout southern Ontario. It is an
omniverous feeder taking both animal and
vegetable food, but its main diet is insects,
snails, crayfish, frogs, etc. as well as carrion. A
clutch of four to eight eggs iS deposited in warm
sand or soil in June and the young generally
hatch in late summer. On their own from the
very beginning, the young are very susceptible
to predation, but they must adapt quickly as
there appears to be a good population of this
species throughout the province.
The Spotted Turtle is found only in south-
western Ontario, from the Lake Erie area north-
ward to, the Bruce Peninsula and Parry Sound
D istricis._These turtles reach a length of -three to
five inches and are generally a dull black or
brown with yellow-orange spots scattered over
the carapace.
This turtle is not as totally aquatic as •the
painted turtle and may be encountered in wet .
grassy areas or even wandering through the
woods. Its feeding habit's are very similar to the
painted turtle and like the painted, it lays only, a
small clutch (2 to 4yof.eggs. The Spotted Turtle
is on the list as an endangered species and is
very rare, even in the U.S., so if you ever come
across one, consider yourself very lucky, but
please, do not molest it in any way.
The Wood. Turtle is another rare and interesting
turtle and has been found only in certain districts
of Ontario. Huron County is one area where it is
known to inhabit. It grows to a length of eight or
nine inches and is brown or dark grey on its -
back. The }bottom shell, or plastron, is yellowish
with a large dark blotch on the outer portion of
each section'(scute)..The head is dark with an
orapgish or brick -"red colour on the neck and
limbs. -
The Wood Turtle is• especially _interesting
because it is the most terrestial of all our turtles.
Apart from its usual diet of fish, snails, etc., it
also eats berries, fruits, mushrooms, leaves and
earthworms when on land. It is an accomplished
climber and has been observed using its
forelimbs to bring food to its mouth.
The Wood Turtle also appears to communicate
with a whistle which sounds like a steam kettle.
It is believed that this whistle plays an important
Isart 1n the courtshii.r-ri-ttra-l. Four to twelve- eggs
are, .id in a sandy place near water in June with
the young hatching in Septeic-iber or October.
The adaptability of this species, as far as its
feod and habitat are concerned, may save it
from extinction, but it is a rare and delicate
beast. Any protection it receives is well deser-
ved.
Next week I'll tell you a bit about Blanding's
Turtle, the Map and Musk Turtles, the Eastern
Spiney Softshell and that old villain, the Snapper.
