t. Sam deals with mystery
By Jim Fitzgerald
Had actor -writer -
producer -director Ted
Johns been born in
another time, he would
'likely have become • a
• philosopher, or maybe
even a prophet.
But because he lives in
the 20th century, he likes
to get his 'messages
across on the stage and
he is very good at it. No
matterwhatsituation in -
life Johns tackles, he is
always able to give us a
tactful yet insightful look
into it. Whether it be the
education system, a
far-mer's life, or the long
dead Donnellys, Johns
always succeeds in
carefully interweaving a
theme in his works and
leaves the audience to
make up their minds on
how to take the message.
St. Sam of the Nuke
Pile, which opened last
week at the Blyth
Summer Festival,
carries 9n with John
tradition,, but yoil don't
feel like you were
bombarded with a ser-
mon, in fact the whole
Do you know?
Some books are to be
tasted, others to be
swallowed and some few
to be chewed and
digested: that is, some
bo9ks are to be read only
in parts, others to be
read, but not curiously
and some few to be read
wholly and with diligence
and. attention. -Francis
Bacon, 1561-1626.
play is meant to 13e highly
entertaining • and
hilarious in places.
• St. Sam is based on the
past, present and future
of nuclear energy in
Canada and in particular
examines the huge Bruce
Nuclear electrical
generating station near
Kincardine. In the two -
act play, Johns tries to
explain the complexity
•and technicalities of
nuclear power, its great
mystery and dangers aritd
its many benefits to our
.society.
Each side of the
argu nt-rs- take/I-by-one'
of the five characters in
the play, with the pro -
nukes outnumbering the
anti -nukes three to two.
William Dunlop plays a
convincing Howard, one
of the managers of the
Bruce power station, Who
is beset at home and a
work by his wife (Diana
5elshaw) and niece Holly
(Seana McKenna) bo h
strong anti -nukes who
almost drive him into the
nut house with their
constant nagging.
,His only defense comes
from a underling at work
Paul (John Jarvis) and a
visonary businessman,
Sam played Tom Arnott
who delivers a strong
impression of Kincardine
entrepreneur Sam
McGregor. They want to
take the waste heat from
the Bruce plant and use it
• to heat greenhouses,
factories and even towns.
Sam's argument that
we . must use nuclear
p wer as a substitUte for
r- declining fossil fuels,.
until other energy
sources are available,
becomes the focal point of
the play. Sam's dreams
and schemes eventually
take us aw'ay from the
emotional argument
given by the pros and
antis and ask of us only
one question: is nuclear
power worth"the sacrifice
in terms of perhaps a
shorter life • and en -

are we willing to give up
our present materialistic
lifestyle and go back to

Sam thinks not. The
world will only end up
warring over the few
remaining oil supplies,
which would eventually
lead to all-out nuclear
war that would be far
worse than a few Three -
Mile Island accidents.
Pat Fiood's set is very
functional, and serves all
the scene changes well.
