This year's Pioneer
Park Association
'Rummage . Sale', -hass
been deemed the best
ever,; Association
-members were worried,
after- attendance had
slipped in 1979, that the
4O yearkold annual event
might be losing its appeal
to the public. ,
Their fears were' -
dispelled on Friday.night,
as over 2,000 bargain
hunters, jammed into the
arena, helping them to
gross about $3,800.
This years expanded
sale featured three new
booths (along with afl the
regulars), a silent auc-
tion, a baking and
preserves table and a hot
dog stand.
The winning bid for the
airplane ride over
Bayfield was submitted
by .Paula Lane, while
other prizes , were cap-
tured by Jim Wallace,
-Goderich, and Elva
Metcalfe, "Bayfield, each
receiving brunches at the
'Little Inn'.
The money raised will
go towards the in-
stailatioon of more gabion
baskets, below Pioneer
Park as well as other
projects.
Chairman Dose
Croswaite would like to
.thank all those that
contributed in any way to
the event, for making it
such a tremendous'
success. Thanks also goes
to the 'table lifters' and
the 'cleaner -uppers', and
especially to Maggie-
McLean
aggieMcLean and Audrey
Marriot, and the local
contributing stores.
Car takes wild ride
A vehicle, which has
—tie err les crib e d :,a
stationwagon, came
reeling around the in-
famous' Hwy. 21 curve in
Bayfield late Saturday
night, instantly tran-
sforming the stop sign
thereon . into a 'pretzel -
like object, and eclipsing
one of the posts in Clan
Gregor Square.
Unable to find another
exit from the park, the
car (after a complete
s aircle—therein-) left -the
same way it had entered.
Technicians from, the
M.T.C., and aided by the
O.P.P., quickly erected a
new STOP sign in the
morning.
And while signs are in
the news we must say
that those M.T.C. people
are so sneaky. First they
get everybody laughing
by putting up one with the
La
oonery
By Bud Sturgeon
For a brief juncture in time, spanning a two.week
period, the 'Mouse' and me were up the lake in a little •
town working together on separate projects.
Looking back in retrospect, it is almost cruel and
indecent to laugh, but what happened to the townsfolk
was completely ludicrous.
There was no `great beer strike', but the Retail Store
was isolated. Can you imagine making the 'five to six'
rush.' -for a case of 'bubblies' only find--the-road
blocked off and no apparent access. The detour signs
led traffit in the opposite direction.
Come the last few seconds before closing, and you
could sit in the shade across the street and watch
young people, old people, fat and obese people and all
kinds of people gallop the two blocky on foot, laden.
with cases of empties, like runners in a marathon.
It's amazing what thirst and mass hysteria can
accomplish. It could become a new type of 'par-
ticipaction'. In any case, they weren't to be deterred
(detoured). That was a pun. Yes, it was.I think.
There was access to the store through a back street
(opposite from the'dire:ction arrow oli the detour sign)
and'I thought it would have been alright to erect a sign
saying, "BEER STORE THIS WAY-, but I doubt the
Ministry would have approved.
Believe me, it was inhuman.punishment to do that in
the midcjle-of,thesummer. .,., .
Second on the agenda this week, we have a chap that
remembers a few things about 'good old Bayfield
past.'
So I sat down and had a coffee and tried to
remember as he rambled along.
"It's long gone now, but do. you remember 'Club,21",.
or what about the dances'in the back.of what is now the
'Tank and Tummy!?
"Story goes that they were so wild, they were shut
down with haste by the authorities.
"There was a family by the name of 'Alphabet' that
camped behind Westlakes Garage one summer.
-"Everybody remembers thedancesatthe 'Pay', but
I (the chap) used to work inside, collecting the beer
bottles on the balcony, so theydn't get kicked -down
onto people's heads (on the dance floor).
"Remember the fire escape on the old school. It was
there for one purpose only, and playing on it was
taboo. When you got caught, it meant istaying in after
four and maybe a lickin'."
There were other occurrences of magnitudinous
proportion, possibly paramount in importance in the
preservation of our history, but I'll save them for a
later column.

Finally, since 'I think the entire issue of signs is so
funny I'll pass on this hot news item.
Rumour has it, that the guy who thought up the
'Louisa Street' signs is now working on a riew project
that could mean a quick promotion and a huge raise.
What is it you say? - "Braille road signs, for blind
drivers."

Question to the M.T.C:
"Are you sure that it is
correct now?"
Let's give credit where
credit is due though.,
Even if we 'lampooned'
them a bit, in all
seriousness, one right out
of two attempts isn't a
bad percentage for a

As a result of an un-
fortunate fall in the Blues
- Stars game, Bayfielder
Eleanor Ritchie will be
sitting out the remainder
of the season with
stretched ligaments and
torn knee cartilage. Her
spirits were not dam-
pened as she was later
heard to say, "My leg had
better be all, right for
skiing and broomball this
winter."
Monday night, the
Goodtimes were sporting
their pew uniforms, and
the Varna Ladies were
