Probably the snealcieet enel meepeee
trioks perpetrated within a few miles of up
was done on the Babylon line, A, short time
ago. It appears while jim. Foster ante
returning home from school one evening
last week, be espied a bird on the fence
Enact picked up a stone and threw it at the
bird, bet unfortenately the stone struck
the tep rail of the fence and in rebounding
etruelt a sheep on the leg, whielx was near
by. The sheep :was noticed to go lame at
the time, but nothing was thought of the
accident until a few days afterwards. when
master Jim was told the owner of the sheep,
Mt, ,folin Deohert, was malting throats as to
what be would do if he found mit who it
was that broke his oheep/cs leg. Jim, on
hearing of thia, immediately went to Mr,
;Le, and told him that he hit the sheep, but
did not. know wbat damage lie had done,
ails t the same time the young man's
fatlfe 'offered to compromise matters by
paying amount of damages) whieh was
accepted at $4 by Mr, Deo hert, and Mr.
Foster took home the sheep, and put it in
the field with the rest of hie fleck. Now is
wleen the trickery was done. Sonic per-
son event into the field, nknown to Mr.
Foster, ahd took the fleece from the dam.
aged sheep ; this of itself we condemn as a
low -lived, sneaky, unprincipled piece o
work. It is not the matter of three of four
pounds of wool, that Mr, Potter is annoyed
et, but thefact that a person would trespass
on his land for finch a trifling matter. It is
to be hoped the person who did it will vin-
dicate their character by merely confessing
the low action and nateking amends to Mr.
Foster. The above facts were gotten from
Jim, and it is quite evident they aro not
exaggerated.
