win. (News-Record:photo)-

pianist wins first
By Shelley McPhee,
Barbara Fotheringham
doesn't talk. It's not that
she can't, but she's just a
little shy around
strangers.
However, it's doubtful
that shyness is a serious
problem, for 'this eight
year managed to play the
piano in front of a large
group --of people and vein
first prize for doing so.
With less than a year of
' piano lessons behind her,
Barbara " entered °the
primary contest .,at the
Central Music League
Competitions in Kit-
chener on 3'uly 5 and was
picked by judges as the
top performer out of six
entries in the class.
Barbara played her
favorite piece, the
Cardboard Soldier, a
song she had learned
during her music lessons
from .Dianne Stevenson in
Clinton at the Hurn
Studio Music.
Barbara needed a little
help from her another,
Mrs. Bob Fotheringham,
in talking. 'about her
accomplishment, but it
was clearly evident from
Barbara's bright, happy
face and the red ribbon
and button pinned to her
dress that the win was a
proud moment.
Barbara • began
studying . piano ii Sep-
tember, 1979 and will
continue her lessons in
the fall. In the meantime
she will keep on. prac-
ticing through the
summer on her Sherlock -
Manning piano.
Barbara said she
doesn't want to be a
famous piano player
when she grows up. Right
now Barbara has other
things on her mind, like
her week away at Camp
Menegung, her swim-
mingiessons and her new
year in school in the fall
when she starts _Grade -3
at Huron Centennial
School, near Brucefield.
In the meantime,
Barbara will continue
practicing her piano
lessons half -art -hour a
day over the summer.
Even though her mother
says Barbara would
rather be ° doing other
things, this eight year old
is proud- of lier•musio and
her fir fit prized trophy,
