AG, 7 m The neve roller skate ig,.program at the Clinton area has: proved such an overwhelming success that the rec'.committee has to buy 40 more skates as the orginal 60 pair are all rented out Steve Campbell, parks surpervlsor, says an adult only skate will tried" on Thursday nights. Here Lisa, Dobson, left,' Jody Murney, and Joy Taylor, all of Clinton have as little spin. (News -Record photo) EIP Ontario's deer seasons for 1980' h .M•4vaac.n .r+n.+ e'uR'[Y1•'i±'1<.wnni.^I'44i4...iC^weMnut.v+..W.vroi.W:.nw', announced and with them. some important c anges in the deer hunting regulations. The m st significant change, of course, is the limited "b cks only"- law this year.' Everyone applying for a deer licenee:.this;year will receive a permit valid only for_taking a deer that has .at leastone `antler that is 7.5 cm •three inches) or more in length. There will also be wine antlerless 'tags available which will be distributed by a draw '-system, which will alfw, does to be taken “by the holder" of these validation tags, The antlerless. tags will be affixed to the back of the regular deer hunting licence. In the past, when hunters were in a group of two or more, arty one of the hunters was allowed to shoot for the whole group. This policy still_ holds true for antlered deer, but• in the case of antlerless deer, only the person who holds the proper, valid ,permit may kill and: seal that particular deer. Complete details on how to apply for and ob- tain an antlerless tag will be Mailed out to every hunter who purchased ,a deer licence last year and "complete information should be ;available from licence issuers by the end of the month. One of the better aspects of the new legislation is that only residents of Ontario will qualify for the antlerless tags. Another change from past years concerns the use of the game seal or "tag" as it has been referred to. Previously, it has only been necessary' -to tag a deer before it was tran- sported, Technically., of course, as soon as that deer was carried` or dragged, it. was being transported, but the broad .interpretation was actually "transported by motor vehicle". Now, however, the game seal must -be *affixed im- mediately at the site of the kill. Instructions on how to attach the seal will be printed on it and the hunter whose seal is on a deer must transport the head of that animal with the seal attached. From the sound of it, you betterlie•prepared to stop at'a road . check and submit your deer for examination by a Conservation Officer this year. The basic deer licence will not be valid for archers this year without an additional validation_ tag affixed to it. This archery tag will cost an additional $1 but.considering the ex- tended seasons involved, should not be too hard to bear. Season here Huron County (included in the grouping 'of zones 89, 90, 91) will have -a three-day deer season -this -year -rte: t1 -be a `controll • _ " meaning the number of licences= -..issued will be limited and they will be, available to residents only. The "bucks only" regulations will apply as .- welt, with anterless permits being distributed (as far as I know) on a draw basis. Hunting with dogs will not be allowed nor'Will high powered "rifles. The season is open only for shotguns and this year, for the first time, 'rnuzzel 'loaders. If regulations run true to form as they have in the past, it will be illegal for anyone to have iri their assession shotgun sholle-epntaining shot sizes larger then number two during the deer season unless they are the holder of a valid deer licence. It will also probably be illegal to carry a rifle or larger cliber than .22 timfire during the season and even then, this rifle must not be used for hunting deer. These A last two regulations are speculation on fny part, but I suspect they will be in effect when theseasonsare announced to the general public. The season here will run from November 3rd (first -Monday .of ,the month) to November 5th. Complete information can be obtained .from the Ministry of Natural Resource's. offices in Wingham. The deer season in the rest of the province is pretty much the same as last year, but there are --some Changes in local districts so you would be wise to check it out before you plan your holidays. In the Kenora, Dryden and Atikokan areas, there will he no seasons in Zones 5, 6, 8, 11B and 12A due to low deer densities. There will be no archery season in Zones 12B, 13 and 21 and • the gun season' has begin shortened in these areas as well as tone 14. In the rest of, the Province, seasons are the same as last year or in some cases, extended slightly. In the traditional central deer range, the season's open ; on November 3, with the exception of Manitoulin Island, which opens on the llth. The hunting season summary shouldbe,Available by August, so just use these dates a lr rough guide until the ' official openings are published. ., golf a four letter... *from page 6 range. To begin the game most golfers won't need a full, set of clubs. A half set will give you the choices you'll need and if you buy' an open stock set, you can always add , the other clubs Pater. 'This is an advantage you cannot get at most sporting goods stores. 'In_ general the clubs, sold through a pro shop are- better quality and will have a greater resale value if you decide to trade them in on another set later on. There is more to choosing a set of clubs than meets the eye. Such things as weight, shaft flexibility, length, and the .lie of the club should be con- sidered, so it's best to have a knowledgeable person help you choose. When purchasing a golf bag you will want Co `consider the option qU__ • carrying or pulling ' the dubs: Bags vary greatly in size and styles as well as materials. Most people forego leather since it is expensive and requires more care than the new manmade 'materials. Be sure the bag is large enough to carry the clubs .without having to jam them in which is damaging to the grips. If you decide to carry them, a, light weight bag iS a must, but it should be sturdy enough to take the wear and tear. Most light -weight carrying bags are not as stiffly structured as other bags and are therefore unsuited to carts, where they sag. If you are using a cart be • sure to get a good stiff bag that will stand. up. With a cart yoti can use a bigger bag if you need it and can also invest in a bag with more pockets for other golf equipment. Whichever .. style of bag you choose, be sure you have .amtile pockets for balls, tees and possibly some rainwear or a sweater.. For those beginners who elect to use a cart, be sure to invest in a good one. Some carts cost -''rndre initially but they last for years and it's easy. to get parts if something does go wrong. If you value your new clubs at all you will take a few dollars and get some good headcovers to protect the woods from scratches. Knitted covers- are best as they let, the moisture out and reduce the chances of the clubhead, swelling or losing its finish. Now • that you, have ,these items, you will just need some balls and tees. Tees are a pretty basic item and you won't have to make, any major decisions when you purchase them. Balls are a different matter. There are a variety of balls with some of the strangest names, and also a variety of prices. You don't need top line balls so you will save money there. Less expensive balls are your best bet and most -beginners find that used balls purchased second hand are a better bargain.
