parts," - he said; "Changing
characters for, .,most is a
matter of changing voices."
.Playing a total of about
five small parts, Allan said
therole of Mrs. Crummy is
the hardest.
"'Mire is a certain quality
in a 'women's voice that is
hard to do," he said. "The
clothes help a lot." •
Born in England, Allan
first came to Canada with his
parents in 1965, when; he was
19. One of his first acting
jobs, hp ' said, was with
Toronto Factory Theatre in
1970.
After spending some time
working in theatre aeras"s:
Ontario, .Allan d ecided' to
return to England,- to enter
theatre' school..1

there and decided to ..tour

Returning_ _to Canada, Al-
-lan remained in the trans-
j,ortation industry fol' awhile
working as a car salesman.
• "I was a rotten car sales-
man,” he said. "I was really
just eliminating other poss-
ibilities."
Allan went back to acting,
but he drove a cab for awhile
when he felt he wanted to get
away fromthe theatre,
Some of his' more recent
work, has been with a coin=

, be .on. the move," he said.
"Raving to set up .a new
routine takes a great amount
of energy." -. _.
Aside from his feelings
about having to travel for
theatre work, •Michel ex-
plains he is serious abouthis
job.
"I'm not doing this -for fun
or for a ;couple of :years, I'm
going to be doing this .for the
rest of my life," he said.
"The public has a strange
idea of what an:actor is,", he
added.. `They don't see us as.
professionals in a . career."
"It doesn't ring leg-
itimate. In the public's view,
it's sort of been the rogues,
thieves and the actors in the
past."
He said it's . easier for
"Movie stars" in the 11.S,,
because they received .more
serious ez'pelsure.
"inthe States, actors neg-
otiate billing, in Canada they,
never. do," he said. "To
b, . es a hs a prn_i t is impor-
tan t.,"
Michel describes Canadian
theatre as being overrun with,
American influences in 'the
past.
"We've been blitzed by
the whole American culture,
so that it beeomes difficult to
find the Canadian essence in
a show," he said.
"Blyth is very important
because- it ' is dealing with
Canadian scripts, he 'add-
ed. •
Living in Toronto, Michel
said he has had the oppor-
tunity to de television shows.
like CBC's Sidestreet and
For The Record, but he
prefers theatre.
The Life That Ja, k Built, is
Michel's first time ; working
on a collective production.
