Rebel Lures, a well known lure manufacturer in the `U,5. The report is brief, but packed full of information, so.I thought1''dtake the opportunity to pass on a.few hints to you. • . In central Florida, there is an area called Rainbow Springs, and it is here, that Rebel Lures does- the testing.for-their products. The waters, .which. are described as "gin clear" are perfect for visual observation and also permit _c• ccellent photographs to be taken• to back up their findings in a scientific manner. The backbone of 4:Rebel Test Report No. ! 10...Depth" deals with the of-. ,fects of varia'b10 such as speed of retrieve and, test wei ht,of yur line on the running depth ioef- your lure". what they have determined is that heavier the line, andthe faster the retrieve, the shallower your lure will run. - In'the course of their testing, they found that a . very fast retrieve call cause your lure to run as flinch as 20 percent more shallow than a slow., retrieve.would. What happens apparently, is that the resistance acreated by the line in the water causes the diving lip on the lure. to rise, thus acting negative y du 'tenrted-'purpo ' ""- lure. It therefore follows that theheavier the test weight of t' a line (heavier: test is • larger diameter th a the lighter-w'eights), the* more ,resistance it e counter's in the water resulting it that same lifting effect. In some_. of their tests,- Rebel found that the maximum depth the -lure will run can vary by as much -as two feet by simply doubling thq test weight of the line. Asan example, they found that one of their new lures, ' the "SupraNatural Bass" ran at an average maximum depth of 101/2 feet using eight pound. test line, at nine and one-half feet using 12 pound. test, and at eight and one-half feet using 17 pound test. Now, if this variation is compounded -by the speed of the retrieve you' can see th- i, the dif,- ference can be quite significant. - this tendency- to rtin at different depths can work both for you, and against you., By varying the speed of your retrieve, you can explore, different depths with ,our lure to find o'ut just where the fish are Tying. That's one for the plus side, but let's look on the minus as well. If you are fishing a certain Iake that has a thermocline set ;up about 1'0 feet deep, chances are thaVs-- where 0.le fish you want to catch_are. If your budt'y is using eight pound test and the SupraNatural Bass lure, he'll .be dragging that deadly weapon right through the spot the big ones are lying In "You, on the other hand, with your 17 or 201b. test will be buzzing the same lure --across about tw.o..feet over their heads. Thattwo feet may be enough to *send you home 'skunked Bigwins in Jastbail league Merner's Construction team and Goderich Township took big wins in the Clinton recreational league fastball play this .44 while your former fishing partner chuckles over a full creel. That's why the results from tests such as these may seem insignificant at first glance, but prove to be very meaningful when examined more closely. But that's not all the info packed into this test re -port. The four categories to be exarnined by the aegler.when presenting artificial baits to his quarry are color, size, depth, and speed.. Depth and speed have been examined here, but only in relation to one - type of lure -- the deep diving plug_ There is a whole world of difference between et-"ween a surface floating popper and a bottom bumping jig, just as there is between the erratic 'slow jerk of a popper on the surface and the fast skip of a surface plug over the same water.
