Historical groups are defended The youthful ap- pearance of 'the new president of the Ontario Historical Society, Dr. Gerald Kilian, who teaches at King's College, London, gave credence°to the scorn he expressed in his talk for those who deride the efforts of local historical societies. One description in particular had aroused his ire. "Local societies are uniformly filled with little old ladies of both sexes!" Dr. Killan was ad- dressing 70 members and guests of the ,;Bayfield Historical Society, who were gathered around him on the lawn of the John 3Hiwdm'arsh lo'g cabin—on ` the shore of Lake Huron. The audience replete, after a 'happy hour' and a bang-up pot -luck supper were in a receptive mood, though some took ,ex- - to certain of the young speaker's remarks. This led to a spirited interchange at the end of his talk as to whether plain historical facts are 'sterile' - the word Dr. Kilian ° used, as to the value of oral history, the need to support . the parent society and other • matters. His—defence of local societies* was justifiable; he has acted as chain -nail of the local societies committee of the Ontario Historical Society and has seen "the increase in numbers of young people like myself, who have yet to reach their mid-life crises". Dr. Kilian has arranged many regional, conferences for local Turn to page 13.
