I don't miss much. I explain it as
a keen mind and a genuine interest
in people. Others say that -I'm just
nosy, but really I can't help it if I
have excellent eyesight and
hearing.
My eyes and ears are not used
maliciously. I,., cont make much
use of the grapevine or the rumor
circuit and unlike your stereotyped
busy body any juicy gossip I pick
up generally doesn't make the
rounds.
I like to know what my friends
and associates are doing and why
they they are doing it, that helps
me to enjoy and understand them
better.
But my interest and insight has
failed me and I missed one of the
biggest secrets of the year.
My friends are a pretty sly lot,
they managed to plan and connive
a social event without my
knowledge and I just never miss
the planning of a party. But I'm
really quite glad I missed out on
this one - it was my surprise bir-
thday bash and they did a fine job.
My birthday was turning out to
be a rather uneventful day,
everyone seemed to be busy that
evening, even I had to work. A
barbecue and 'a quiet evening had
been planned with another couple,
that sounded alright to me. It
wasn't even a pot luck deal, being
my birthday and all I didn't have tb
whip up a salad or deviled eggs.
It had been a busy week so ,I, took '
time out to enjoy a lazy, relaxing
hour at home before the barbecue
and stopped by my parents' for a
visit, knowing that no one was in;a
hurry that evening.
Little did I know.
I should have guessed, my
usually slow poke boyfriend had
more energy than usual and was
eager to .get to the "barbecue. I
figured he was hungry.
°I arrived at the barbecue to find
a dozen -and -half grinning mugs all
patiently waiting to have their
secret revealed.
I must say they did a fine job and
managed to keep their plans un-
der -cover for nearly a month-and-a-
half. That's quite an ac-
.complishment with me hanging
around, but I sure am glad that I
miss a few newsy tidbits here and
there. 1,

• SAGINAW, Mich. -The ex-husband
of a woman whose charred body was
found on a Huron County farm near
Goderich March 25 was remanded in
custody for trial Friday on a charge of
murder.
Gene Woodward of Saginaw was
arrested in Long Island, N.Y. in April
and charged after the body of his ex-
wife Jean, 24, had been identified
through dental charts. He appeared
Friday at a preliminary hearing on,,
the charge.
Saginaw 'prosecutorRobert Kac-s.
zrrarek said Woodward will have the
charges read .to him 'in the circuit
court, June 30 or July 7, at which time
he is expected to enter a plea and
have a trial date set.
State officials decided to proceed
with the trial in Michigan, rather than
Ontario, because under Michigan law
it isn't necessary to prove the woman
was murderedin the state, only that
an abduction had taken place. He said
under Ontario law, it would have to
have been proved that the woman was
inurderedin Ontario.
