Ontario's $4 million
Sires Stakes program is
about to launch-its--1980-
racing season.

decade's first Stakes race
at Barrie RagewaY Ofl
Saturday evening, May 24
and the event. has been
split into two divisions

$15,400 aestake.
The next evening, May
25, the 'three-year-old'
pacing colts make their
• first .Sires Stakes ap-
pearance of 1980„ at
Campbellyille's Mohawk
Raceway and that race
will be worth over $50,000
in purses. -
The new crop of two-
year -olds will make their

category of age, sex and
gait and 10 Trillium
Series races. The latter
Series is open to two-
year-old pacing and
trotting fillies that are
owned by residents of
Ontario. These fillies, in
contrast to Sires Stakes
eligibles , -were- --not-
necessarily sired in the
province? Sires Stakes
eligibles must_ have been
sired by a stallion that
was at service in Ontario
during the year of con-
ception.
This marks the seventh
annual season for the
Ontario Sires Stakes, the
fourth largest program in
North America behind
those in New York, Ohio
and Illinois. It has grown
