Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
Lampoonery
By Bud Sturgeon
Saturday was another of those unpretentious and
nonchalant type of days.
I' was standing out by the porch when up the Janeway
wanders "Fifty", nose to the ground like a real news
hound. I surmise he was on the prowl for a scoop.
Being as there was no ale at the Hollow, he Invited
me on down to the "Mile High" for a "Howard Street
Healer
He cracked out a bottle of the best and proceeded to
pour himself a tall cocktail glass of kibble, then began
to speak as he munched thoughtfully.
"Well the Moleman and Mrs. Mole are away to
Hogtown for` a couple days so I have to hold down the
fort myself."
With "Fifty" you always haveto make small talk
for a while until he opens up.
So I say to him, "Well! we went up to the Circular
-ity-last-night to the -watering hole; therrfor something
to eat at the "Gag and Vomit. Looking at the food on
the plate served to remind me that there is one rodent
pellet in one out of every six packages of popping
corn."
"Bark, bark, bark, he laughed as he ambled up to
the bar and waited to be ',.fted onto his favorite stool.
"What's that smell," he says. "Did you forget your
deodorant today?"
"It's my brand new 'Clone -Cologne', makes me
smell like myself," I retorted.
We bantered back and forth for a"w-hile until he had
one too many "kibble delites", then he started to
preach. You know, .a few down the gullett and
everybody turns into a 'Plato'.
' What follows are exerpts from "Fifty's" oratory..
" 14.2-8E marina, I wished he shove that barge
vigilantes .... costing the taxpayer's money got
to be stopped fools .:., frivolous attempts at;your-
nalism promoting .the comrnerej.alization of Bayfield
.... ignorance is no_ excuse .... people with "dollar
sign" eyes .... selling, selling, selling .... get rich fast
,.. no regard for residents .... hurting the year round
merchants ...,. but no for the most part we're still in
good shape but there is still a small minority..... like
the wild west outsiders .... no regard for bylaws ,...
the river ..., beach and parks are the drawing cards ....
can't afford to changethem ...."
"That makes sense "Fifty," 1 said. "You're only a
dog and you can see through it all. Why can't the
others?"
"Bark,. bark, bark" was all he said as I left him in
the subdued light of the "Mile High's" contemplation
room and meandered back up the street.
Maybe you are wondering how I can talk to a dog?
It's easy, he barks in "morse code".
Players repair
ball diamond
The topsoil was graded
off of the infield on
Friday in preparation for
the layer of stone dust to
be laid. The stonedust
when -in place, should
provide a harder surface
giving the ball a truer
bounce. This should
elimihate a large per-
centage of injuries
received by players when
trying to field a ball only
to have it hit a rut or a
rock and bounce into
their face.
Saturday afternoon,
members of the Babes,
Goodtimes, Flyers,
Bobcats and ballplayers
from Paul Bunyan Camp
raked the rocks off the
infield in preparing it for.
the final layer of "dust",
It should be completed
by Monday to allow the
full slate of games to be
played this week.
Final spreading will be
finished by Harvey
Godbolt and the robing
will be done with the use
of Terry Fitzsimons'
"roller apparatus".
Thanks goes out from
the ballplayers and the
Recreation Committee to
everyone who con-
tributed to the cause.
