Sooner or later, the person that hunts is going
to be put "up against the wall" by an anti -hunter,
and explaining your position is, to say the least,
very difficult. One of the things that makes it so
difficult is the fact that the "anti" is usually
misinformed, totally biased and completely
unpreparedto listen to any sort of reason or
accept proven statistics. They are also generally
ready to question your parentage, ethics, morals
and sanity to prove their point, rather than
present a sound argument.
Anti's always seem to be the great "defenders
and helpers of wildlife", but it's very seldom you
ever see one actually out in the bush ding
something constructive. Several years ago,
when the deer in the Port Loring and Shawanaga
deer yards in .the Parry Sound District were
starring--beeause-of-an- ext'r-emelt'-hard- whit erK,'.iL
sure wasn't the 'Friends of Animals' who were in
there helping the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The guys that were busting snowshoe trails to
browse stands, and wielding chainsaws to drop
poplar trees so the deer could feed on the twigs
were members of local : unting groups. Over the
past few years, I've planted thousarfds of wildlife
shrubs, constructed and erected nesting boxes
for wood ducks and black squirrels and sown
about a ton of grain and grass seeds to provide
food and cover. I may be old fashioned or
something, but when someone starts spouting off
to me about what I should or should not do, I kind
of expect them to be setting some sort of an
example.
If I met someone slugging around waist deep in'
mud and slime in a swamp planting duck potato
or .wild rice, and they said I shouldn't shoot ducks
on that particular marsh, I'd probably agree and
wade in to give them a hand. But, when gbmeone
.nails me. at a cocktail party, and you know..
they've never stepped off a carpet or concrete in
their life, and they proceed to tell me exactly
what to do - well, that's when I get a little bit
irked.
The thing that always amazed me is that
someone, with no biological training whatsoever,
just .dismisses the findings and recom-
mendations -of educated biologists the world over
with a casual,` ``That doesn't matter, hunting is
bad." They will blame hunters for -the ,disap-
pearance of every species of wildlife that has
occurred on this continent (probably even in-
cluding the dinosaur) and then go home, cut the
grass on their lawn down to a neat one inch
length, rip that damn bird's nest out of the
eavestrough again and sock enough insecticide
on the garden to knock every bug for a block
around silly. Then when you try to tell them that
"loss of habitat" is more damaging to wildlife
than hunting they'll scoff and say there's lots of
wilderness left forthem. Well, guess again who
lobbied for, and paid for (through licence fees
and taxes on guns and ammunition) those few
bits of wilderness areas that are left.
The good people of North America have
decided that the leopard is an endangered
species and all trade in spotted skins should be
stopped. That's good, but they have also stopped
the legitimate sportsman from ever bringing
back the skin of one for a trophy. There are
leopards that do need to be shot,so why shouldn't
some poor underdeveloped country be allowed to
bring in some tourist dollars by letting a hunter
go there, shoot the troublesome animal and bring
the skin home subject to proper government
documentation. Nope, that's not the way it
works. According to the anti's, that leopard is
one of nature's critters and should be left en-
tirely alone. I've always wondered what their
sentiments would be if that leopard was prowling
around THEIR neighbourhood, knocking off
family dogs and the occasional kid. They might
just have a little different line of thdught, but
then that affects them personally. Judgements
are easy to make when they have no effect on
your own comfort, finances or safety.
